White balance both cameras on set. That way the RED camera will retain the metadata when you go through clipfinder. From there, if you need to adjust the RED footage more to match, then you can still change the metadata in clipfinder before you render.

I would also suggest having a colorist color your footage. Especially with you using cameras that are as different as the RED ONE and the EX1.

March 26, 2009 at 3:39 pm in reply to: Which New Nehalem Mac Pro Should I Choose?

I’ll just say that I’d probably go with the 8-core 2.26 with 12GB of RAM from crucial.com and the ati card.

The 2.26 8-core is supposed to be just as fast as the older 3.2 8-core. I’ve heard great thinks about the new architecture and would lean towards that route instead.

[Chris Macgregor] “Our thoughts were to use Pro Res HQ from RED via Clipfinder that will transcode both to 720p (our finishing format). “

If you’re finishing at 720P, then using clipfinder to compress the RED footage to ProResHQ will work great. It of course limits you’re color ability if you’re going to use the ProRes files for finishing, so to be on the safe side, when you transfer your RED footage, don’t push the colors too much. If you clip information in your image in this step, the only way to get it back is to go back to the R3D file.

But if you’re mixing EX1 footage, I think your workflow is a pretty good way to go.

Not that I know of. You’d need to render a separate video with just the alpha info.

March 21, 2009 at 5:23 am in reply to: Do I really need to ZERO ALL DATA?

[Zane Barker] “Time Machine is great for data files and some applications, but for pro apps like the FCS that install components into the OS itself it does not do to well “

That’s a great point Zane. Scratch the Time Machine option.

[Josh Evans] “Is there some sort of program i can download to clean up my computer and kill glitches in the system etc.?? “

You could try using Time Machine and then whenever you want to go back to how your system was after a fresh install, it will let you revert back.

You could also make a fresh install on one partition, then just use carbon copy cloner to clone the drive over to the partition you use on a regular basis. This would just be a one click overnight thing.

March 21, 2009 at 4:55 am in reply to: DVCPRO HD – Workflow Help..

[Jaron Gold] “Regarding the capture, my blackmagic card does not have a setting for 720p/24 – DVCPROHD- I know there is no difference between 24p and 23.98 unless going out to film, so 720p/23.98 DVCPROHD will work, correct? “

23.98 is what you’re looking for.

[Jaron Gold] “Also, when I capture at 23.98 and playback in quicktime, the format is 720p/60 and says the frame rate is 23.91 -“

QuickTime is always messy with frame rates. Don’t trust what it says. Just make sure FCP has the right frame rate and that there aren’t any duplicate frames (frames that repeat). You only need to check five frames to make sure each is unique.

And yes, the codec or compressor will be 720p/60, but that doesn’t mean that your frame rate really is 60p.
