I love my new 15″. The 17″ is nice, but I decided it was a little too big to carry around everywhere (I use my computer for both portable editing and email).
If you’re not going to be carrying with you everyday, I think a 17″ would be really nice for editing, though the 1920×1080 might not make a difference because it would make things quite small. It might not be as useful as one might think.

Either using QT or Compressor. Neither will be “fast”.

The flicker filter in FCP is more for fine detail that buzzes on a monitor. I really just blurs the footage.
I’ve never found a good way of fixing problems like that.

If you want the footage letterboxed, you can use compressor to downconvert the footage to SD and letterbox it at the same time. Just create a custom setting and add the letterbox filter.

I’ve created some setting in compressor that downconvert to SD 10-bit uncompressed. Then we use that file to encode our DVD (either in house for simple DVD or through a DVD house if it’s more important).
The settings are:
10-bit uncompressed 720×480 anamorphic
Under frame controls:
Resize: better
Output fields: progressive (from 23.98)
Adaptive details selected
Anti-alias: 0
Details Level: 0
Rate Conversion: fastWe tested several different settings and these were the best for our footage. Try it with a short clip to see if it works for you.

Sorry for the late response.
What codec is the screencast footage? Does it look okay in FCP? How are you exporting it?
If you’re exporting to the DV codec and opening the file in QT, it will look horrible unless you enable High Quality video. (Apple+J, select video track, select visual settings, select high quality video)
If you answer the other questions, we might be able to give you some more input.

First off, do you need to capture in HD formats or just SD formats?
If you need HD:
The Kona 3 isn’t a good option if you are going to capture component. I’d go with a Kona LHe. I like Kona because their support rocks. But I’ve also picked up some Decklink cards over the years that have worked well.
If you only need SD:
Buy a used Decklink card off ebay that has component in (Decklink Extreme or SP or other).

You could try to make some of your own device control presents to see if you can get one to work, but from what you’ve said, it should be working, at least on one of the two decks.
Has the card ever worked? The card could have a bad serial port connector. You might try to contact whoever sold you the card or Blackmagic and see what other options you have.
