It’s bad compared to many other Apple apps, but for me, it’s not nearly as bad as bogiesan made it out to be (note: FOR ME, not every else). I can see how people new to the software could be left scratching their heads.

If you do this, I suggest you have two drives for every backup because drives can die or just start acting up. Store one drive on location and the other offsite.
There are several enclosures that will hold two drives and you just need to buy an inexpensive tray for new drives.
Our long term plan is to use DLT-S4 (800GB/tape for about $110) for our offsite storage and FW drives for our onsite.
Also, stay away from external enclosures that have more than one drive in them. While they might be less expensive, it increases the chances of the drive going down because there are two drives in it. It’s also easier to recover data from a single drive unit than a dual drive unit if you have problems.

Wow. Those are some harsh words.
I’ll agree that the interface isn’t up to Apple standards, but for many high end software apps, the UI is secondary to the power of the application.
While not user friendly, once you know that external drives are located in the Volumes folder, it’s not that bad. Shake is set up the same way.
At least we know that the UI is only going to get better from here.

WMV support is provided by Flip4Mac, not FCP. In order to export full WMV clips, you need to purchase the extended plug-in.
That might be what’s causing the AVI problem too.

It really depends on your setup, but a 4 seed SAN could cost somewhere between $25-$35K. I went the ebay route and spend about $17, but ebay isn’t for everyone.

It’s not importing because the audio is muxed with the video (combined into one file). You might try MPEG StreamClip or Mac the Ripper to demux the audio and convert the video to a more edit friendly format.

If I have a video with a lot of text I found it worth my time to play with the advanced settings in Compressor. Unfortunately, compressing videos is an skill, not a setting, and a skill that’s quite hard to do well.
