mixing screencast and sd footage export for web compression help
Hi all,
I have a fcp project (talking head interview) that was shot on a xh a1, downconverted to sd via camera, and edited in fcp (16:9) , it was also mixed with footage from a screen cast using ISHOWU, captured at 640 x 480 (captured 29.97 fps). So I made a new sequence and placed my footage in there using a 640 x 480 square pixel sequence setting (going to web). My problem is not mixing the footage but compressing, specifically the screencast ISHOWU footage. Every time the talking head looks fine, but the screencast with text appears terrible. The text is pixelated and unclear. If I render out w/an animation codec it’s fine crystal clear. Trying to get it the text nice and clear to an flv format seems difficult. Is it possible? Can anyone recommend a method or codec that will treat a screencast mixed with downcoverted hdv footage that will play nice in an flv?
Thanks in advance, I’m at ends here and any help would be appreciated.I’m thinking of redoing the screencasts by changing the monitor settings to say 800 x 600 to make things look bigger and capturing them at 640 x 480. But I’d rather not, as they were difficult to do.

Sorry for the late response.
What codec is the screencast footage? Does it look okay in FCP? How are you exporting it?
If you’re exporting to the DV codec and opening the file in QT, it will look horrible unless you enable High Quality video. (Apple+J, select video track, select visual settings, select high quality video)
If you answer the other questions, we might be able to give you some more input.

Thanks for your response.The screencast footage was captured at 29.97 animation. It looks fine in FCP, and after file>>export quicktime>>(animation or uncompressed) it looks fine. I don’t have to worry about any sort of dv format cause it’s a strictly web product thus the square pixels. It’s just going to .flv format that I had a problem. So using flash encoder I played with the bitrate and boosted it up to over 1000k and it seemed fine, this is obviously way too much. Anybody? stuck between a rock and a hard place with a spoon to dig out.

If I have a video with a lot of text I found it worth my time to play with the advanced settings in Compressor. Unfortunately, compressing videos is an skill, not a setting, and a skill that’s quite hard to do well.
