Hey, thank you both for the good info on this issue. Think I just may try to get R17 going on the new system since I’ve always struggled with big daylong renders with my underpowered computer in the past.

Yes, Graham, thanks for your response. I am using the Cinema 4D camera, which I did add to the scene over in C4D. I have also run through the definitely annoying login process in order to start up C4D Lite 22 and am not constrained in any way to modeling to my heart’s content over in Cinema. It just appears AE and C4D are not speaking to each other since I cannot begin to see the fruits of my labors in After Effects.

Thanks, Chris. My main issue is the file size of even the shortest videos before I arrive at the final mp4. I usually go with the Apple ProRes 4444 codec, but I wonder if you’d suggest others which may result in smaller, yet high quality renders?

  • Andy, I really appreciate your assistance in working through this area of C4D that is still not my strong suit after 11 years of experience with the program. That setup is ideal for our robot arm motion and I suppose I’d just replace the cylinders and spheres with sections of the robot arm and then keyframe the Joint 2 Goal. Guess I could just AutoKeyframe the motion and save basic moves that I could copy and paste onto different timelines as needed. Thanks again for help taking this project to the next level!

  • Andy, thank-you so much for your super tip. After trying everything else, I eventually came to the same conclusion. And yes, I would very much like to take a look at an example, if you don’t mind. That would be a great help.

Yep, you got it. So often, like pre-comping a layer in After Effects, just applying the dependable Fracture Object in C4D makes it all better. I ended up using Pose Morphs, but would have rather not had to deform the geometry, so this is the preferred method, and simpler! Thanks.

That’s the next thing I’d try. Thanks for confirming it.

Thanks to all who replied and set me straight on the limitations of the Animation codec and benefits of the alternatives. I can definitely say I’ve learned something today!

Sorry, I’m not in my home studio right now, but at the full-time job in radio production and I was in error about the Animation codec. That I do have but many of the other options for .mov files like Photo-JPEG are what’s missing, and they are indeed enormous files if you are forced to go with Animation for every QuickTime render. If AE could somehow open those .mov renders out of Cinema 4D, that would make things much easier.

That’s right, Max, the option is no longer available. The codec list is not as extensive as the 2017 version of AE and I’m of the same mind as you in that I’m very cautious about upgrading. If it works I tend to leave it alone. Adobe updates at a frantic pace, so I try to keep at least one or two older versions of AE, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere Pro since I know I can depend on them. The most upsetting to my workflow is not to be able to import .mov files into AE, at least that’s the limitation I’ve seen happen more often than not in this latest version.
