I’m running AE 2020 with Element 3D and have been noticing these errors lately upon closing out AE: “AfterFX.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close“, this after it has already closed. But the rendering issues started after receiving an Element 3D error that I failed to save but mentioned experiencing an “unrecoverable error“. Later I got this message: After Effects: AEGP Plugin Element: Leaked effect refs (5027::12) and since then, anytime I try to send an E3D comp to Media Encoder it does open the program but does not add it to the queue. I’ve even downloaded the installer from Video Copilot and installed the latest version of E3D into AE 2021, with no change in the AME behavior. The only workaround I’ve found is to go to Composition > Add to Render Queue and render out either an enormous .mov or .png sequence that only then can I open in Media Encoder to finally arrive at my .mp4! I’ve performed all the hints I could find from Adobe and many others but am at a standstill as to what to try next.

I never send my comps to Media Encoder, I’ve experience numerous errors when trying to do so. I wish Adobe never allowed this as an option. Best practice in my opinion and many others is to always do your encode through Render Queue and make any finals in Media Encoder. Your specific issue is probably because Media Encoder doesn’t know what to do or how to render the Element plugin.

Thanks, Chris. My main issue is the file size of even the shortest videos before I arrive at the final mp4. I usually go with the Apple ProRes 4444 codec, but I wonder if you’d suggest others which may result in smaller, yet high quality renders?

I find most render problems with AE and AME are down to GPUs. I know the idea of using the extra ram is appealing, but it just seems to create more problems for users than it solves. About 2 years ago I switched to software rendering only and haven’t had any issues since.
