if it’s any consolation i found the same problems on the mac side. the audio mixer automation was totally unreliable, unpredictable and ultimately unuseable for me. would be nice if it worked properly but i fell back on keyframing as well.

save the illustrator file with your artwork organized in the layers you want to work with and IMPORT the ilustrator file into after effects as a COMPOSITION. double clik the composition in the after effects project window and it opens up the comp with your all separate layers and a time line.

that works great adam. just got C4D 11.5 recently and wasn’t aware of the diplacement deformer that you used on the plane which lets you see the diplacement shader’s effect on the mesh without rendering. what a useful addition that is. thanks again for sharing all that info.

that’s very cool adam, thanks for posting that. it’s a very interesting layer shader that creates that bryce-like mountain range. do you have any tips or clues as to how to create a shader that would respond to the height of the diplacement, ie the higher diplaced areas would be white sno-capped the lower levels darker colors, the floor a desert tan for instance. is there a special trick or would you maybe use a multi-color gradient that is mapped on the Y direction somehow?

it doesn’t mattter whether the design came from a pen or a trace. you should be able to use the paths that trace creates after “expand” of the trace. the paste into a shape layer or a solid in AFX will have anchor points and paths, that’s what you’re pasting. twirl down the masks menu and you’ll see the component paths there. a design like yours will no doubt have lots of component parts, it wont be a single element and it will have all the anchor points and paths from illustrator. you can select in the stroke plug-in which paths the stroke effect uses or it can use them all.

you mentioned an AISC option, don’t know what that is but maybe double check your preferences on the illustrator save panel and check PDF compatible, and maybe double check your general prefs under file handling and clipboard and ensure that PDF and AICB are both checked.

  • you’re always helpful and generous with your time here vince, a good example to us all. and you’re right it’s probably never useful or good manners to state the obvious. if offended, my apologies to senor rick. i just lost it after such a detailed, lengthy and wild goose chase to the end solution of what that mysterious red line might mean. i was excited by the mouse shaking discovery, and up until the very end i was sure it was all adobe’s fault with all that embarrassing bad software they write. (i didn’t want to spoil the surprise ending solution by typing in “red line” in premier help.) anyway, the mystery kind of had a trick ending that threw me. again, my apologies.

i think i had something wrong in one of the axis settings. i started over and built it vertically with all the elements in XY and the spline mask axis in XYalongZ insead of laid out on a floor with the spline mask in XZalongY. also added some more depth to the extrude depth movement and repositioned it on the cloner a bit and it works as you outlined. nice trick. thanks again.

    hey tim,

thanks for posting this interesting solution. i’ve been trying to get it to work for the last hour but no success. it cuts the map spline shape correctly but doesn’t mask off or restrict the clones. have double checked your directions, pretty certain i have all your object orders/modes/types corrrect. i wonder will this set-up work OK in C4d 10.5 as well as 11?

adam, could you put the texture on a light and “project” that texture onto an object’s reflective surface material?

perhaps under VIEW, see if the “pixel aspect ratio correction” is turned on.
