  • projecting an image on to extruded text

Posted by Jake Martin on August 6, 2009 at 6:26 pm

    Hi

I have a camera moving around some extruded text very close up that it’s abstract and I want to “project” different images onto this text so that the camera sees them as it moves

    Can anybody help?

    Thanks

I’m not exactly sure what you’re trying to do, but it sounds like using camera projection on the textures might be what you’re looking for.

Thanks Adam I’ve tried playing with camera mapping and I’ve not got very far

The effect I’m trying get is something like this

but I want the to change the images reflecting on my text over time before it resolves.

    Any ideas

    Thanks

Ah … the compression is so heavy on that clip … but I think what you’re looking for is an evironment map, which is basically a fake reflection. If you put an image in the environment channel your object sees it as if it was projected spherically around it.

    Great thanks I’ll try that

adam, could you put the texture on a light and “project” that texture onto an object’s reflective surface material?

[ronaldo montalvo] “adam, could you put the texture on a light and “project” that texture onto an object’s reflective surface material?”

When you put a texture on a light it acts like a gel or gobo, so it will affect the lights brightness and/or color. You can make some very nice effects that way but I don’t think it’s what the OP was looking for.

You can also create a plane behind the camera and project the image on that (make it big) an then kick up the reflections on your text to taste. It might use up a lot of resources but it is very controllable.

Chaos is the beginning of everything.

2 ways of changing over time -1. Create identical planes (the number of images you want to use) and create corresponding textures for them. Use visibility to control when they are seen. 2. create a mov. timed out with the animation and use it as a texture in the material of a single plane.

Chaos is the beginning of everything.

I’ll give all those a try and see what woks best
