July 24, 2009 at 7:32 pm in reply to: Retouching video clip – length of clip changes!?that’s really good advice/tips tiago has about using sequences, avoids a lot of potential problems. i also tend to use sequences (picts/tiffs) for 3D rendering and the kind of retouch/rotowork you were doing in photoshop but have never had any problem using qtime animation codec exports on the mac, should work fine. don’t know what was causing your problem (it will remain a mystery) but glad that solution worked out for you.

July 24, 2009 at 3:07 am in reply to: Retouching video clip – length of clip changes!?not sure. seems like your process is right but there is still a frame rate discrepancy between fcp and photoshop. when you import into pshop if the file is actually 23.98 (23.976) and 4:08 long (104 frames) you shouldn’t have to change the duration, it should import and show the correct duration automatically if the timeline is also set to 23.976. extending the duration is what i think accounts for the dup frames you got. the fact it showed a duration of 3:14 rather than 4:04 accounts for those 19 frames.
can you import or look at your exported fcp clips in after effects or qtime pro to confirm that they are in fact 4:08 at 23.976 frames, (or as final cut calls it 23.98)?
dunno, the 103/104 difference might be just a numbering convention that’s off, like it starts with frame 1 rather than frame 0.
also, did you try to change the frame interpretation in final cut of your original roto’d pshop export to see if that worked and that clip is maybe OK?

well, not exactly. when you look at the IMAGE SIZE menu panel (commmand/option/i) in photoshop it uses the terminology DOCUMENT SIZE to describe the dimensions AND the resolution. a picture from photoshop with a DOCUMENT SIZE of 720×540/300ppi displays 4 times bigger in AFX than one that has a document size of 720×540/72ppi, right?
it doesn’t matter if you look at it in inches, centimeters, points or pixels. perhaps just a question of different terminology. seems like the important reference is what photoshop refers to as the PIXEL DIMENSION, which is the actual pixel size and takes into account the ppi setting in the pshop document size panel and is the actual displayed size of the image in AFX.

Seems the 24fps is being interpreted as 30 fps at some step in your process, maybe on re-import to FCP. (multiply your 104 frames x .8 and you get 83 which is the exact diff between 30 and 24 fps.)
I’d check the re-imported clip in FCP and confirm that it actually is being interpreted as 24 ((23.98), if it’s not then manually change it.
Also confirm that your pshop timeline was 24 and not 30. In Pshop when you create a new document, the default timeline duration is 10 seconds and the frame rate is 30 fps. To change it, from the Animation palette menu, you can choose Document Settings. Enter or choose values for Duration and Frame Rate.
Even if the pshop timeline was set to 30 I think you should still be able to interpret the 30fps roto’d clip as 23.98 and your work will be OK.

July 23, 2009 at 4:40 pm in reply to: working with 300 dpi in AE for 2K video project that need to be transfered to FILMto say that the pixel size is “irrelevant” may be a bit misleading. there might be some confusion over terminology and what photoshop calls the DOCUMENT SIZE as opposed to the PIXEL DIMENSION. keep in mind that a photoshop picture with a DOCUMENT SIZE of 720×540 at 72dpi and one with a DOCUMENT SIZE of 720×540 at 300dpi are NOT the same when you open them in AFX. the latter is approx 4 times bigger and the 720/300dpi pshop picture’s PIXEL DIMENSION is actually 3000 pixels wide.

maybe check out photopresenter by boinx software too. another template based slide-prez software, can use stills or video with it’s motion and BG templates, might be mac-only. for certain jobs and budgets it’s a time-saver.

sorry, maybe i’m misunderstanding what you are trying to do. do you want a 4:3 aspect ratio image for 4:3 TV or are you trying to get a widescreen 16×9 image for a 16×9 widescreen TV (which displays round circles correctly)?
the reason the circle looks oval on your tv screen is because you’re rendering with an anamorphic rectangular PAR and funky media encoder is not taking that into account, not because a TV has rectangular pixels. if what you want is a 4:3 image with round circs and assuming your square pixel comps work OK for media encoder and WMV’s, if you render square pixel 640×480 from square pixel 640×480 AFX comps i don’t think you would have your problem. -
small buttons in the basic video settings pane of media encoder, bottom line, just above bitrate settings, two buttons for pixel aspect ratio, one standard 4:3, one for widescreen 16×9.
so you’re not burning DVD’s but making WMW’s? maybe just make the TV version a square pixel size. a TV doesn’t actually “have 4:3 ratio pixels”, it’s just the ratio of the screen right? ultimately NTSC is 640×480. you could make your WMV version for TV 640×480. build your TV version projects in square pix 640×480 afx comps and avoid the pixel aspect problem you’re having altogether.
not sure why you would make “WMV’s viewable for the mac”. seems like quicktime might be better.

first, are you trying to get a 16×9 image letterboxed in a 4:3 screen, or an unstretched “normal” 4:3 full screen image (which in NTSC is really 640×480 square pixel). also, are you looking at the size/shape of the mpeg2 file from media encoder in quicktime? if so, maybe try to burn the 4:3 dvd in Encore with that file and ensure that it doesn’t work properly. quicktime can apparently see/display the size of mpeg2 files incorrectly. also, did you make sure the small button under the summary in media encoder is set to 4:3 and not 16:9? it can be a gotcha’.
