Mograph clones to fill vector
Posted by Matthew Geiger on September 9, 2009 at 11:46 pmHello-
I am using Mograph with c4d 11. I have a spline of a world map, and I want to make a bunch of clones of a cylinder and have them take the shape of the path so that is looks like a bunch of cylinders (eventually affected by sound) are making up a world map. I am currently attempting this with a cloner object and my path spline, Is their an easier way to do this? Matrix object?? I’ll keep trying and let you know what i come up with, If any one has any suggestions I’d certainly appreciate it?
thanks

September 11, 2009 at 12:49 pmI haven’t. I thought spline mask was for creating composting masks and traveling mattes. I’m not new to 3d but mograph has particularly poor documentation. I’ll definitely give it a shot though. how would one go about using it??
thanks -

September 11, 2009 at 2:15 pmI suppose I should mention that I want the map to be filled in, not a bunch of object outlining the spline. Kinda like the example scene in mograph with the face and the close object but if thier is a way to make it a cleaner grid, that would suit me much better.

If you:
1)create your clones with a cloner using the grid array
2) put a rectangular spline around your map spline (bigger than map)
3)add the 2 splines to the spline mask and set it to B subtract A(assuming map on top, then rectangle below)
4)add the spline mask to an extrude
5)add the extrude and the cloner to a boole
6)make sure the cloner is on top, then the extrude and that the boole is set to A subtract BLet me know if that works for you…

September 16, 2009 at 9:20 pmhey tim,
thanks for posting this interesting solution. i’ve been trying to get it to work for the last hour but no success. it cuts the map spline shape correctly but doesn’t mask off or restrict the clones. have double checked your directions, pretty certain i have all your object orders/modes/types corrrect. i wonder will this set-up work OK in C4d 10.5 as well as 11?

September 16, 2009 at 10:32 pmi think i had something wrong in one of the axis settings. i started over and built it vertically with all the elements in XY and the spline mask axis in XYalongZ insead of laid out on a floor with the spline mask in XZalongY. also added some more depth to the extrude depth movement and repositioned it on the cloner a bit and it works as you outlined. nice trick. thanks again.

October 20, 2009 at 12:32 pmhello ronaldo and matt
I have a similar project and would be curious to see your results. I am new to c4d and am having trouble getting this to work.
I am trying to fill the 7 continents with a simple stick man I modeled. And then have it all wrapped around on a realistic globe.
Thanks
Andrew
