July 26, 2011 at 3:32 am in reply to: database error with Davinci 8 Lite

    Hi Steve,

On some machines we’ve seen the database installation fail, and this causes the database to not start up properly.

A fix for this requires a few command for you to type on the terminal. This will uninstall the database, so the next install of Resolve will install it properly.

    1) Stop the server
    sudo /sbin/SystemStarter stop postgresql-8.4
    2) Remove menu shortcuts:
    sudo rm -rf /Applications/PostgreSQL 8.4
    3) Remove the ini file
    sudo rm -rf /etc/postgres-reg.ini
    4) Removing Startup Items
    sudo rm -rf /Library/StartupItems/postgresql-8.4
    5) Remove the data and installed files
    sudo rm -rf /Library/PostgreSQL/8.4
    6) Delete the user postgres
    sudo dscl . delete /users/postgres

Now, re-install Resolve, reboot, and then start Resolve.

    Hope this helps!

    Regards,
    Rohit

    Hi Paul,

Which OS are you running? It you are using OSX 10.6.8, you need to update to CUDA 4.0.19 from NVIDIA’s website.

If this doesn’t help, could you please capture logs and send it to our support email – davincihelp (at) blackmagic-design.com

You can capture logs using the following app:

    /Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/CaptureLogs.app

    Thanks,
    Rohit

July 26, 2011 at 3:17 am in reply to: Can’t get LUT to work

    Hi Toby,

We tried this on a few machines here. It seems to work for us, both OpenCL and CUDA.

    /Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/LUT/CineSpace

Could you make sure the account you are running this from has write permissions in the folder? There should be a file with the same name and with a 3dlut extension and with a size of 431244 bytes.

    Regards,
    Rohit

No – only the non-GUI GPU is used for CUDA processing.

July 25, 2011 at 6:38 am in reply to: Multiple GPU Question

The Q4000 has a lot more GPU RAM. The extra RAM comes in handy when using lots of mattes, parallel mixers, or high resolution images (4K/5K).

On the other hand if GPU RAM is not an issue for you, you can consider putting in two of the 470s in the Cubix (officially unsupported BTW), and you should get a pretty fast system!

The performance in a Desktop 4 should be better than Desktop 2 as you get full x16 link to the GPUs.

For new purchases, we recommend the Desktop 4 for this reason and the fact that it allows you to use double-wide GPUs without losing any slots.

  • There are a few ways to try to speed up performance on underpowered/unsupported platforms:

    – Set the timeline resolution to SD (especially if you are not monitoring over Video you can set it to SD)
    – Set the Video monitoring bit-depth to 8-bit
    – Set the scaling to Bilinear in the Settings tab
    – Use a compressed codec like ProRes. DPX files won’t play very fast on an old laptop unless you have a really fast SSD, and even then
    – Make sure the Energy saver is switched off in Preferences – else CUDA will use the underpowered GPU and not the fast one.

    Hi Jay,

It’s got to be the window outline. Can you do it form the View menu instead of using the hotkey.

Can you export your project and send to davincihelp (at) blackmagic-design.com if that does not work? Please also do a CaptureLogs.app so we can get your system details. CaptureLogs is in /Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/.

    Thanks,
    Rohit

Can you check if your Play Still is turned off, and you are not in Wipe-A mode?
