  • database error with Davinci 8 Lite

Posted by Steve Grimes on July 25, 2011 at 7:26 pm

    Hey all,

When I try to open davinci lite after installing I am prompted with a create database screen. When I use the defaults and hit enter I receive the error “Failed to open database. Could not connect to server. Could not connect to 127.0.0.1 . QPSQL: unable to connect” Any ideas what is going on with this and/or what I could do to get a database created so I can start playing with this awesome software? System is a 6-core mac pro with an ati 5870 isntalled. Thanks for any help.

Pretty sure the Lite version doesn’t allow for database connection??

My bad, it just limits you to not sharing project over the database!

Good luck with getting it going.

    Hi Steve,

On some machines we’ve seen the database installation fail, and this causes the database to not start up properly.

A fix for this requires a few command for you to type on the terminal. This will uninstall the database, so the next install of Resolve will install it properly.

    1) Stop the server
    sudo /sbin/SystemStarter stop postgresql-8.4
    2) Remove menu shortcuts:
    sudo rm -rf /Applications/PostgreSQL 8.4
    3) Remove the ini file
    sudo rm -rf /etc/postgres-reg.ini
    4) Removing Startup Items
    sudo rm -rf /Library/StartupItems/postgresql-8.4
    5) Remove the data and installed files
    sudo rm -rf /Library/PostgreSQL/8.4
    6) Delete the user postgres
    sudo dscl . delete /users/postgres

Now, re-install Resolve, reboot, and then start Resolve.

    Hope this helps!

    Regards,
    Rohit

    Hey all,

So I got it to work, and I think I know what the issue was. Lion has changed the permissions on the /Library folder from admin to wheel. Therefore I believe the permissions were insufficient to install the database when I put in my admin credentials on the installer. Instead I enabled the root user and used those credentials and that time it worked. I also completely removed the Postgres folder and all preferences from the /Library folder. Hopefully this helps anyone else that was in my shoes.

    Steve,

I am also having trouble under OS X Lion 10.7, and I keep getting the same database error. I followed the terminal directions above and every command worked except invalid path for the last delete command.

Then, I removed the preferences and library folder as you stated, uninstalled and emptied trash, enabled root user via directory utility, logged out and back in as root, reinstalled again and same database error. Tried it twice now 🙁

Did you use the terminal commands above?

    Hi Carl,

Make sure you are not using the OSX Lion Server as that includes it’s own postgres server and might conflict with the Resolve setup of postgres.

Alternatively, are you able to do a fresh installation of Lion or a fresh install of SL and Lion upgrade?

    Regards,
    Rohit

Thanks…. I’m definitely not using Lion server, and I just did a fresh Lion install before my first installation attempt of Resolve 8.

I could attempt another fresh Lion install on that Mac Pro and try installing Resolve again. Is the secret to a successful first install to be logged in as root user?

You definitely need to use an Admin account.

Well the first install i did was through the admin account… but tried the root user after uninstall!

I’m going to wipe everything and start from scratch soon, and i’ll post the results.

    No need to reply…. thanks!

    @ Carl Ballou

so have you been able to get it to work?
i have the same problem, since i uninstalled the database with the command lines in terminal, how it was posted here before, which i initially did because i got this strange “postgresql” user after i installed resolve lite on my new mbp (i7 2,2 17″) for the first time.
so now i cannot get resolve to work properly.
what am i supposed to do?
    anyone??

    appreciate any help
    many thanks!
    robert
