Yes. BD burners have two lasers, red for DVD and CD, and a blue laser for Blu Ray. Sounds like the blue laser has popped.

If you have deep pockets then the Nvidia Quadro K5000 Mac edition might fit the bill. Considering the price and the cost of your other upgrades it might make more sense to buy a new Mac Pro if you are looking at future proofing.
If however you are planning on using FCP7 for some time to come then stay as you are and work with what you have, because FCP7 can’t take advantage of new hardware due to it being a 32 bit application which can only use 4 gig of available ram.

Well, I have used the AC90 and didn’t like it. I found it lens heavy and didn’t balance well. As to the firmware update, I just googled it and it seems un-impressive.

Tom, I’m not a great fan of updates and only do them if I’m sure that I need to. If find that with Apple’s updates they tend to give with one hand and take away with the other. If it works don’t fix it.
Firmware updates are something else. If you are at all unsure, I would suggest you take your camera to your local dealer to update the firmware, as if things go wrong during the firmware update your camera could be rendered useless. Do you NEED the update and is it worth the risk?

Don’t be ashamed of your setup, we all work with what we have. Most people use Clipwrap to convert AVCHD to ProRes but I’m not sure if the current version works on PPC. You can download a trial version here.

There’s a ton of junk out there but your”e better paying the extra cost of, as previously mentioned, G-Tech or something from the Sonnet Fusion line. Quality electronics inside the box and enterprise level drives.

As Shane mentioned, SD cards are pretty much platform independent but dealing with their contents is where problems show up. With newer SDXC cards there can be a problem. Someone running FCP6 on a PPC Mac would not be able to read an SDXC card. FCP6 on an Intel Mac, no problem with an SDXC compatible reader. SDHC work equally well on either PPC or Intel. It’s also good practice to lock the card before inserting it into the computer to prevent anything being written to the card by the computer.
