I am not exactly sure what the result should look like. do you want a path to be made of closed dots and trim along the path one dot at a time?

[Greg Gesch] “Does it have anything to do with your Fill and Stroke being set to None”

    they are somewhat connected.

for example if you set your shape layer’s fill in the toolbar to none, then it’s switching the eyeball off from the fill parameter of that shape.

[Cassius Marques] “I’m not sure AE can create shapes from .ai sequences.”

it cannot. Op need to import them without checking the sequence checkbox all will be fine.

[Kris Sheehan] “I figured out if I add it from the toolbar I can manipulate it in the drop down”

you can add it either way. it appears you are trying to work intuitively with Ae and this is not so easy. especially with shapes. invest some time and read how they work. here’s a very good reading section about shapes:
    https://www.crishdesign.com/books/Creating-Motion-Graphics/CMG5/CMG5_32_ShapeLayers_exerpt.pdf

here’s the adobe help files section where I took this resource from:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/overview-shape-layers-paths-vector.html#about_shapes_and_shape_layers

after a nice reading everything will makes sense. for example the reason you can’t manipulate your paths is because you choose to draw a parametric shape instead of a bezier shape. parametric shape offers other ways of manipulating the shape than manually adjusting vertices or paths.

December 5, 2016 at 8:52 pm in reply to: hold an expression at it’s last value

Thank you Dan. it works and I will keep it near. I was thinking this could be much simpler so I could tweak it to other manipulations as well – for example wiggle. here I was thinking that instead of my “?” there’s only a few letters of codes and that’s it. I can’t really get my head around this but blindly copy pasting it. guess this was heavy stuff.

if you are interested on how to do this manually without code, I would suggest you study about the graph editor.

    here are 2 good resources:

you’re right. guess we will have to wait and see what Op can try and see what’s the issue eventually.

December 1, 2016 at 9:19 pm in reply to: Fast frames in graph editor

[Polina Korneeva] ” I linked the images to an adjustment layer where I have the position keyframes”

you linked them to a layer via parenting but this layer being an adjustment layer serves no use to you. next time use a null layer – it’s a layer that does not render and it’s only purpose is to be a parent to other layers. adjustment layers are for applying an “effect” to affect the composite of all the layers underneath. a null is for parenting layers to it to control their transformation properties all at once.

[Polina Korneeva] “but turns out it’s still difficult to adjust the timing right to make them slide down smooth enough”

you should leave the graph editor for later if you want. first set the initial animation where you want it to be. if you want the movement to be faster then set the keyframes close together and slower vice versa. later when you want to make different speeds between the two key frames (for example very fast at first and very slow towards the end) you can do that by adjusting the handles in the graph editor. with the speed graph (the default for position) the taller it gets – the more speed it moves.
