[gary adcock] “why have you not named your cards?”

If I could butt in here, that’s one of the problems. In the field you format the cards in the P2 Store or in Camera. This looses the card name. So when you plug the P2 Store into the Mac all you get is “NO NAME”. There is no metadata to refer to only the Icons. It’s worse because the the drives never mount on the desktop the same way twice.

If you format on a PC you have the option of naming the card, not in a Mac.

  • [Chris Bell] “I discovered the P2 Import from P2 Store in FCP provides a significantly faster import via USB.

The bonus of this method is that you do not have all of those locked MXF files on your hard drive. “

That’s fine but I like to keep the originals in the Archive with all the Meta data. If you only keep the converted QuickTime you loose all the file info. If you need to delete any of the CLIP TEXT files on the Mac just uncheck the locked button in file info.

  • Like you I downloaded the demo for HD Log, but no P2 support, I think the demo is their ‘Silver’ version and the P2 Viewer is only available on the “Gold”.

I love my SPX800, the pictures are great but I am becoming a little dissappointed with my workflow with the Mac. The P2 store is the best option for archive in the field. The other option of carrying a laptop and a portable hard drive is just too much hassle for me. Of course the best solution is for Panasonic to sort out the pricing on the cards. I’d love to be a fly on the wall and see what it actually costs to produce a P2 Card!

  • Forgot to mention, that using the slot on the G4 is fine the speed is OK. But that’s using a different bus and the the card is fast.

  • I am using a Dual 1.8 G5 with 4 gig of ram. My capture drives are Avids thru UL4D and a G-SATA 500 gig Raid. The G4 Powerbook is standard 1.6 mhz with 1 gig ram.

Just to clarify. If I import direct from the P2 Store into FCP a 4GB partition takes about 1 to 2 minutes. The speed goes when I copy the files to the G5 for archival purposes.

Check out https://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0123-ADE2. I use it to convert my ADC to DVI.
