I am evaluating the SPX800 camera and have a P2 Store 60gig HD. It connects to my G5 via USB 2. Copying one full P2 4GB card is diabolically slow. It takes 20 minutes!!!!
I tried the drive in a Vaio laptop and the same file took five and a half minutes!
Anyone had similar problems with the Mac USB 2?
(I have tried all ports with and without USB 1 gear attached, no difference)

This is definitely not the norm. I am importing from my P2 store into FCP and it moves pretty quick. For archiving, I’m burning 4gig DVDs right off the store and am getting the performance I would expect from the P2 store.

I know for my mac to even see the store, it has to be mac formatted, which involves holding down the cancel, batt, and HDD CAP buttons at the same time. I don’t think you want tot do this with footage loaded though.

For what it’s worth, we are not seeing the speed issue.

To see if your P2 Store is truely connecting as USB 2, go to the blue Apple in the top left corner of your screen and choose “About This Mac” and then select “More info..” from the info panel.

The P2 store should show up under USB High Speed if it’s being recognized as USB 2. If not, could it be a bad cable?

that is painfully slow and definitely sounds like you’re getting usb 1 functionality at the most.
There has been some reports about the speed difference with both usb and firewire between macs and pc’s. PC’s achieve faster transfer rates – no idea why. Also The firewire 800 limitation on the G5’s being the worst offender (G4’s actually get faster transfer rates.)
anyway A good resource for speed tests etc. for ports and HD’s is

Hmm, something is wrong as on my G4 one 4 GB card transfers in about 3-4 minutes, and done, that is through the PCMCIA slot. The USB slot should be about the same. I transferred 100GBs of P2 data from one hard drive to another in about 90 minutes. One was on firewire and the other was on USB.

Check to make sure that is really USB 2 and not USB 1.

Was the P2 Store full? That would be 60 GBs and would take close to an hour, perhaps a little more if you were verifying as you go.

    Best,

Just to clarify. If I import direct from the P2 Store into FCP a 4GB partition takes about 1 to 2 minutes. The speed goes when I copy the files to the G5 for archival purposes.
