I can’t imagine what codec you are using that would cuase that. I would suggest going to the Panasonic website and download their DV codec. It used to be available for free, I don’t know if it still is or not. Premiere really likes working with the Panasonic DV codec and it is considered to be very good.

You must have it set to IFO mode, but that may not be a problem. Virtualdubmpg2 may still be able to work with them. If it can’t there is probably another version of VirutalDub that can.

First, 1.2 ghz is not considered relatively fast for video processing. I don’t mean that to discourage you but you should understand that video is resource-intensive and some of the processing will be time consuming. There are several factors that effect this. In addition to the speed of your processor the amount of RAM you have is key. One Gig of RAM is considered the minimum daily requirement for efficient video processing.
Have you applied a lot of special effects, audio transitions, audio effects, video and/or audio corrections? These can have a big effect on your processing time, especially if you are working on a computer that is bare minimum requirement. Think of each correction, transition or effect as another layer of processing that needs to happen. The more layers, the more time it will take.
I work on a computer that has a 1.5 ghx processor and 1 gig of RAM. Over the weekend I rendered a video is close to two hours running time in about 40 minutes. The special effects, transitions, etc were minimal, though.
I don’t think I understand your second query (love that word!). If you mean that the original clips that you captured are saved and the .avi file that you render are saved as separate files, then yes, that is the case. Technically they are different files containing different information. Again, I’m not sure that I understand your question properly.

You have a lot of decisions to make here. If your DVD burner can burn DVD-9 your task will be much easier. When you say “standard DVD resolution” there really is no such thing. The compression you will apply to the video will be determined by the length of the video, the make-up of the video (is it a lot of interview footage without much action vs. a lot of action).
It might actually be easier for you to visit the site http://www.dvdrhelp.com and start reading and learning about the encoding process.

July 7, 2006 at 1:14 pm in reply to: fading still images in and out in adobe premiere proI have not moved on to PPro2 yet, but in 1.5 there are two ways to do this. One is to enable the opacity handles for your video. Then set two keyframes for each fade in/fade out. To fade in you want one keyframe at the very beginning of the still and the second at the point where you want the still fully faded in (or technically 100% opacity). Grab the keyframe at the inpoint of your still and drag it down to the bottom of your frame making it 0% opacity, or virtually invisible. Do the same at the end of the still to fade it out.
Or, a more simple way is to place a Cross Fade effect at the beginning and the end of your still, with empty timeline before and after the still. This will also create a fade in from black and a fade out to black.

I’m not familiar with PPro2 but perhaps these thoughts will help. The overall length of your movie will help you determine if it will come even close to fitting on one DVD5 (standard single-layer DVD, holds 4.7 gig of information). The compression that you choose will effect this. Less compression = higher quality but bigger file, more compression = lower quality but better chance of fitting on one DVD5.
How long is your movie, in running time I mean?

Thansk, that sounds like exactly the fix I need. I’m a little surprised because there is not much movement. It is basically a talking head clip, but it was shot in a living room in the evening, so there may have been rapid changes taking place in the natural light. I will work with these adjustments.

After ripping the DVD files to your harddrive use VirtualDubMpg2 to convert the files to .avi using whatever codec you prefer. I used the Panasonic DV codec.

It has been a long time since I used 6.5 but if I remember correctly it did not export Mpeg2, you have to export as .avi and then use a separate encoder to convert to Mpeg2, like TMPGenc, Cinemacraft or Mainconcept.

I’m not sure that this is the source of your problem, but are you trying to work with the Mpeg2 file directly off of the DVD? If so, try converting that file to .avi, then bring it into Premiere and see if that solves your problem.
