Treat the HDV as DV. Capture via firewire and cut in HDV format. Then if you are using an external box just play out. If you need to convert then embed the HDV sequence into a new 10-bit uncompressed (or your choice) of sequence and play out that to digi. It should be relatively straightforward. Just remember to check the fields.

Also there’s a useful little gadget called cocktail which will clear ram cache and get rid of lots of grotty little files that accumulate.

October 12, 2005 at 11:36 am in reply to: FCP 5.0.2 & Sony HDV Deck (Pal) Making New Clips on Capture????Hi Adam!
I had the same experience when I first started capturing my HDV footage.
There is no way of completely eliminating this slightly odd feature of FCP. It’s something to do with how HDV records where you stop and start the camera.
You can minimize the effect though (so a tape will be broken up into 3-4 clips instead of 15-20!)
Have a search below for a conversation I had with Steve Connor about this problem.
There’s a couple of settings you need to change.
Search my posts, you’ll see what I came up with.

Woah! hang on, what actually is DVDSP and who makes it??

I always use the export via compressor function in FCP and so far it’s worked pretty well for me.
I’m going to check out DVDSP though and see if it’s any better.
Will report back!
If you have any specific problems let me know and I’ll try and help

You could rip the dvd into it’s streams. Search on the net for DVD ripping software. If you’re on apple then mac the ripper works well, there are a bunch of others out there. Don’t use them for any copyright infringement though.

Hi Paul
I think I was involved in the original discussion in HDV, it’s good to see others figuring out how to get the most out of HDV.
Firstly the Multibridge doesn’t have a firewire input, so you’ll need to check on the output from the Canon camera. It might have a component out like the Z1 so you could do it that way.
Secondly be wary about pre-release hype around cameras. For months people have been saying that the Z1 will be eclipsed by Canon Panasonic, JVC, and my local camera shop. Just don’t get too carried away until it actually comes out. Years ago I opted for a PD150 over a XL1 (which was all the rage) and I’ve never regretted that move. I am very excited about what the Canon seems to offer, but I’m not holding my breath until I see it.Hi Luke!
Just noticed your comment:
“I’m not sure how the Canon cameras are made but it is possible that if you capture the HD-SDI output while shooting live video, you may capture perfect, uncompressed video rather than video which has already been compressed in to the HDV format on tape.”
it’s a bit off-topic, but can this be done with a Z1 out of the component out?
