  • FCP 5.0.2 & Sony HDV Deck (Pal) Making New Clips on Capture????

Posted by Adam Howden on October 12, 2005 at 9:39 am

    Hi All,

So I have just upgraded to FCP 5, and downloaded all the updates I’m aware of am on OS X.4.2 and am starting a new project. I’m trying to capture from a Sony HDV 1080i 50i mini deck. Ok so its all logging fine, am getting a picture on my cinema display etc

BUT when capturing it keeps making new clips, when ever there is a cut/edit on the tape it makes a new clip in BIN. ie Group Walks Upstairs, Group Walks Upstairs – 1, Group Walks Upstairs – 2, so on and so forth it seems where ever there is a cut (ie the camera has stopped recording and started up again) Now I’ve checked the tape frame by frame and the frame is definitely on the tape but the computer just wont see it, and makes the new clip.

So I have tried playing with the device control settings and have tried all the combinations available with HDV so this isn’t it. I’ve tried just doing a Capture Now from the Log and Capture window and still get the same result, but not always in the same place. So the first time, it’ll make a new clip at 3 secs in then the next time I try it’ll be 5 seconds in.

I have also played with the settings in the User Preference panel, ie changing to all possible combinations. Report Dropped Frames After capture, Make a new clip etc and its not making a difference.

Can someone please shed some light on what the hell is going on here, PLEASE!!!! HELP!!!!

    Many thanks in advance 🙂

    Hi Adam!

I had the same experience when I first started capturing my HDV footage.

There is no way of completely eliminating this slightly odd feature of FCP. It’s something to do with how HDV records where you stop and start the camera.

You can minimize the effect though (so a tape will be broken up into 3-4 clips instead of 15-20!)

Have a search below for a conversation I had with Steve Connor about this problem.

There’s a couple of settings you need to change.

Search my posts, you’ll see what I came up with.

[Adam Howden] “it seems where ever there is a cut (ie the camera has stopped recording and started up again)”

    Congratulations!

You have discovered a special built-in “feature” of HDV.

The “make new clips after camera pause” is part of the HDV format and can’t be turned off.

Here’s the link to the thread that Robin spoke of:

Its still a problem with non-Sony camcorders, and the “fix” is not always effective even WITH Sony camcorders.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks so much for your responses. Am back in the office this morning, have unchecked that box and were off and racing. Such a simple little solution to the problem, but at the end of 6 hours or so of updating software and logging and then having it not work, I was in no state to fully figure that one out on my own.

Ah the good old world of digital video, there’s always something new and intersting to learn 🙂

    Thanks Again!!
