  • [Simon Krom] “has the benefit of not needing the software stripe as all the drives are seen as one RAID5”

Hi Simon, you are correct. The PRO FC has one high-performance RAID controller and it manages all 16 drives, this is then presented as 1 LUN to the computer(s). This is a preferred method in a SAN configuration as it simplifies the FC port assignments and such. Additionally, both FC ports of this one controller can easily be used to aggregate the bandwidth and take advantage of MacOS’s built-in Multipathing I/O. This gives you 510+MB/sec data rate without complications of striping two LUNs.

Updated web site with stream count info, click here and scroll towards bottom.

We have also introduced the new PRO IDC which has two controllers and much faster… PRO IDC link.

July 9, 2008 at 6:19 pm in reply to: Playing 2K DPX in Real Time?

Hi Liam, you will need a fast enough disk system. This format needs about 300MB/sec (12.2MB per frame x 24) of data rate to keep up.

We are using AJA’s DPXtoQTTranlator to convert the raw DPX fames into a QT RGB clip, then drop the QT clip on the timeline. Plays well with a fast RAID.

March 21, 2008 at 7:12 pm in reply to: what storage drives for my fcp setup??

[joel conder] “but not sure what is best.”

Hi Joel, you’ve identified your capacity and price range, the other thing to identify is do you need RAID protection for drive redundancy. Simple RAID 0 would be less expensive, RAID 5 protection will be a little bit more.

You can use these pages on our web site to identify which would best suit your need. Here is the RAID Level Descriptions if you need it.

Also another handy info page is the Video Space to quickly identify storage space requirements.

While you are at it, please check out our product line-up for your storge options.

March 18, 2008 at 1:22 am in reply to: Xserve RAID 2,5 – good deal at this price?

[arnljot Bringedal] “Can anyone advice me?”

    Hi arnljot, I 2nd (3rd?) Walter and Bob’s answer.

SATA RAID give you best bang for the buck (Euro even better deal).

We just introduced our brand new PRO RX, a super fast rackmount RAID protected 16 drive array (800MB/s RAID 0, 750MB/s RAID 5), this follows the heal of the very fast PRO DQ introduced last summer.

If you are in the market for a good price, please drop us a note at cow@dulcesystems.com and we will work out a good deal for you.

March 14, 2008 at 10:29 pm in reply to: 2 computers at 1 EXH

[Wally Dewally] “Will just a crosscable work.”

You probably don’t even need a cross over cable. I believe the Macs are self adjusting.

However, if you are hooking up the two computers via ethernet but with out a router or something that will do DHCP (assigns IP addresses) then you have to manually assign an IP address to each computer. Gets abit involved.

March 6, 2008 at 3:37 pm in reply to: Kona 3 and the NEW MacPros (Jan 2008)

[Shane Ross] “my card is running at 2Gbs, not 4Gbs”

Hi Shane, the 2Gb/4Gb sounds like its related to the Fibre Channel link speed, which is different than the PCIe slot speed of x4/x8/x16 of the Mac Pro, pre Jan 08 or later.

If your Fibre Channel card in the computer is a 4Gb then it should be linked at 4Gb if the other end supports 4Gb. The slot the card is plugged into would not affect the Fibre Channel linked speed.

Depending on the Fibre Channel card, there might be a LED indicator telling of the link speed.

[paolo mugnaini] “start cutting a 120 mins documentary.”

    Hi Paolo,

You mentioned this will be in DVCPRO HD format and you have about 4 TB of disk space. There does not seem to be enough disk space to do the job if you have everything online, plus your rendered output too. Looks like you would need to have 6TB or more space.

You can use our Video Space web page to check out the amount of disk space needed vs time vs video format.

If this is an important project, you might consider using RAID 5 protection to give you some peace of mind. Dulce Systems offers a line of storage products.

If you need disk storage, please drop us an email at cow@dulcesystems.com or call 818-435-6007, we can talk over your needs and work up a good deal for you too.
