April 30, 2014 at 2:42 am in reply to: Blackmagic Ultra Studio Mini Monitor not working on mac pro and fcp X?Thanks. I thought as much. It is complete nonsense – it essentially does not function with a mac pro/fcp x combination. I have returned mine for a refund.

I have sorted it out. Very straight forward – the project must be in a format recognised by the Panasonic eg 1080P. That was it. If they are not the TV wont recognise the HDMI signal and FCP X will tell you that there is no AV device attached.

March 11, 2014 at 2:33 pm in reply to: Alert – updating to Cuda Driver 5.5.47 causes fcp x to crashNot at all Jeremy. I was kind of very surprised that the presence of the Nvidia driver could wreak such havoc with FCP X. However, I suspect that it was some strange interaction with Neat Video’s software. The apple engineers told me that they had not encountered the problem before. As noted, the driver that caused all the difficulties is 5.5.47 – if there is an issue you can always uninstall it and all the associated Nvidia files and reinstall the previous driver. Best Rob

March 11, 2014 at 2:05 pm in reply to: Alert – updating to Cuda Driver 5.5.47 causes fcp x to crashNo. It was the driver which came with the new mac pro. I only updated because I got a warning message from Nvidia when the computer started up that it needed an update to a new driver. As noted, now that I have rolled back to the previous version, all is well and FCP X is rock solid again.

March 11, 2014 at 1:57 pm in reply to: Alert – updating to Cuda Driver 5.5.47 causes fcp x to crashI am not purporting to understand how it works. I am describing empirically what took place.
The problem started immediately after the cuda driver was updated to the latest version. The log clearly indicated that the driver was implicated. That was the conclusion that Apple came to in diagnosing the problem.
After that Neat Video ceased to function altogether and the controls disappeared.
I reinstalled the previous driver and neat video commenced working again.

March 10, 2014 at 10:58 pm in reply to: Alert – updating to Cuda Driver 5.5.47 causes fcp x to crashThe Cuda driver is necessary because it powers neat video’s excellent noise reduction software. I am wondering whether it is a bug in Neat Video
Apple care eventually resolved the problem. I had to remove the latest driver and roll back to the previous driver.

No I didn’t. It was not necessary. I agree that that would have been painful. I tried a hierarchy of possible solutions and luckily it worked short of a reinstall.

I agree with Bill’s observations and that reflects my precise experience. I know this forum is about technique so I will be brief. I had Initial extreme resistance to fcp x as I had become wedded to fcp 7. Several perfunctory attempts at learning fcp x did not help the situation. However, then I decided on deep immersion and there did come an a moment of epiphany when I internalised the new logic of the programme. It takes at least a month of really working at it hard. In particular, I had to develop new editing strategies to deal with the magnetic timeline before I could move forward. All I can say is that it was worth the trouble.
