Hi Quintus,
Sorry to hear about your troubles. My problems are now solved. I used Digital Rebellion’s preference manager first to clean up my old preferences. Then I installed the latest update of fcp 10.1.1 and that was it! I have my old fcp x back. Even the Libraries with very large numbers of events are responsive again.

I am suffering lag as well. At first I thought it had to do with the complexity of my Library with many projects. However, I created a Library with just one event in it and have had exactly the same issues of non responsiveness and lag during the most basic editing functions

January 8, 2014 at 5:53 am in reply to: Do Multiple Events in a Library Slow Things Down? This is precisely the question I have been pondering.
I have several large libraries with multiple events and have definitely noticed that performance is affected by having so many events in a single library. There is nothing in the Apple White Paper concerning managing media to indicate that this would be the case. Indeed, it suggests that the Library structure could be used to hold multiple events.
Creating multiple libraries for a single production because it otherwise it will affect performance seems like a step backwards to me. It is going to be a problem for people working on large documentaries or feature films. Having to open and close multiple libraries and then drag and copy events between libraries does not seem to me an optimal why to manage media that for single production. I am beginning to wonder whether we have not actually lost something in the move to the new library structure.

Thanks David. I really appreciate your response. Hope all is well with you and that you are making some great films.
Yes, I should have imported the material into different libraries. Prior to the upgrade I was not having any difficulties at all. I am working on two documentaries and simply created two libraries, one for each production. Each has hundreds of events and many projects. I think that is the core issue particularly as I am using a pretty ancient 8 core mac pro. I am going to split the material into different libraries as you suggest.
However, the pain wont last long – I am waiting for new mac pro to arrive so I can certainly live with a few issues until then.
Best Regards
Rob

Thankyou. I tested it and as noted it worked just fine.
I updated a project with only referenced media and transcoded files with a very large number of events and projects. I am using an old tired mac pro 3,1 8 core. Amazingly it still manages to load and deal with it notwithstanding the single library struture. I am guessing that this is because of improvements in data management in 10.1. Nevertheless, I am nearing the end of the project and I do not need to reference the other events with clips in them very often any more and it occurred to me that a smaller library with just the near completed project would be a much better idea.
Concerning transcoded files, are you able to elaborate? The entire project is about 600 gigs and resides on a standard 7200 rpm drive and is accessed via esata – no raid. The original files are red epic. Notwithstanding this my ancient machine can still pretty easily handle it – amazing really.

Yes. I did. I also read the apple white paper on the new library structure. I might just give it a go and see what happens i.e. copy just a project into a new library.

June 27, 2013 at 11:58 pm in reply to: Duplicating Project and clips only duplicating the references to the clips not the clips themselvesCheers. Ahh I see – it is duplicating exactly the projet as I created it including with referenced media. Thanks for the solution.

Thanks David.
I will take a more careful look at the timeline tomorrow. However, it does not appear as if there is anything there at all.
One point that might be relevant. This project was created from importing an xml from FCP 7 using FCP7 to X app. I wonder if it is a bug in the translation?
