Alert – updating to Cuda Driver 5.5.47 causes fcp x to crash

Just curious why we would need a CUDA driver for the new MacPro or is that installed with Resolve or something?

FWIW, It causes no problems at all on my iMac (Late 2012)

Apple care eventually resolved the problem. I had to remove the latest driver and roll back to the previous driver.

Huh. Seems odd that a CUDA driver is needed when there’s no hardware to use it, or maybe I misunderstand how CUDA works.

Just curious but what driver version is broken and which one works?

I am not purporting to understand how it works. I am describing empirically what took place.

The problem started immediately after the cuda driver was updated to the latest version. The log clearly indicated that the driver was implicated. That was the conclusion that Apple came to in diagnosing the problem.

After that Neat Video ceased to function altogether and the controls disappeared.

I reinstalled the previous driver and neat video commenced working again.

Did you install the CUDA driver the first time?

No. It was the driver which came with the new mac pro. I only updated because I got a warning message from Nvidia when the computer started up that it needed an update to a new driver. As noted, now that I have rolled back to the previous version, all is well and FCP X is rock solid again.

Sorry to bug you, but I am expecting new MacPros soon and I was just curious if the CUDA drivers came standard or if you installed them.

Not at all Jeremy. I was kind of very surprised that the presence of the Nvidia driver could wreak such havoc with FCP X. However, I suspect that it was some strange interaction with Neat Video’s software. The apple engineers told me that they had not encountered the problem before. As noted, the driver that caused all the difficulties is 5.5.47 – if there is an issue you can always uninstall it and all the associated Nvidia files and reinstall the previous driver. Best Rob
