Hi Walter, let me know if you have any Smoke questions. I’ve been using that for a number of years now. It’s kind of an odd box but what makes it great is the quality of output. The color corrector is really good, chroma keyer is really good, and the trackers are about the best out there but I wouldn’t want to cut anything complicated on it. But you don’t have to since you can do that elsewhere and import it in which is what it’s made for. Things like tape in/out also are rock solid.

Yeah I saw that. I don’t know if it could ever go as fas as a SMPTE type requirement but I think the other companies have responded appropriately by committing to cater to the needs of their customers as opposed to dictate what their needs are and I believe them. I think the good news is that Apple is probably the only company that would do something like this.

I think there is no question the reason this forum gets the traffic it does is because they killed the old FCP. I think it has to do with the number of FCP users and the fact that Apple broke a major assumption in the software industry that new versions will be improvements but more or less the same thing as the old ones.
I personally have no problem with X and if people like it and use it fine but as far as professional editing is concerned – i.e. you make a living doing it – I hope this signals the end of the reliance on Apple software because there are a lot of companies who provide equipment and software for film/video that mostly follow a set of unwritten rules, and you can’t have companies that have huge influence that just choose to randomly re-write those rules one day or feel they don’t apply to them. People’s livelihoods depend on having some idea what is going to happen based on what has happened on the past.

Unless I’m not following you the easiest way to do that would be to just play the clip at 200% and voila every other frame is gone. Also Sapphire has a freeze frame plugin that will hold frames by whatever interval. If you put in the value of 2 it would hold the first frame and play it twice and then skip the next frame and then hold the third one twice etc.

Well if you’re trying 5.5 make sure it’s Avid 5.5.3 for OSX 10.6.8. But now MC 6 is out so why not try that. And uninstall old one first.

From what I heard back in the old days when they were figuring this stuff out, they decided 24 fps was about as slow as you can get away with. It was really a cost thing as more fps = more $$$$. But very importantly each frame rate has a look and different frame rates are better for different things. I personally like 30P a lot for the look and ease to work with. Peter Jackson I hear is going 48P. It will be interesting but it will also be a very different look and will look more video-ish and makes drama look more soap opera like but has way less motion blur which is good for fast paced stuff.
