Ram can actually hep a lot. The key is to listen to your hard drive and if it’s working like crazy, non stop then you’re out of available ram. Task manager in Windows, and Activity Monitor in Mac will tell how much is your using. If it’s maxed out than render times will be much slower.

Well I don’t think it’s a fair statement to say Canon has failed in pro video. They are one of the most successful lens makers in the world and they make some of the most pro lenses you can buy. I think what happened though was over the last 10 years there was so much change in video cameras they just never came up with the right combination at the right time although they still had some success in the prosumer market. That changed with the 5D and 7D which probably took them by surprise but all of those sales I’m sure got their attention and it probably sunk in what people were looking for.
But in any case it will be the look of the camera that sells it or not. I think Canon is in an excellent position to come out with a great video camera and I’d have no reservations buying one if I was pulling in the sales to justify the price. Since I’m not I’ll stick with the 5D for now.

I understand the confusion. I was really surprised at the price tag on that more than anything else. But there are plenty of rumors that a 5D MK III is on the way out which addresses some of the limitations of the MK II. But yeah, 20K just doesn’t make sense but who knows what the image quality will be, we’ll see if it catches on. But my guess is this unlike FCPX is a professional product, aimed at the RED/Sony maybe even Alexa market.

I have to agree that Adobe has some work to do and IMO it’s make or break for PPro. After Effects just works. It’s one of the most reliable programs out there and is incredibly deep.
Tonight I opened a very simple SD project in PPro and the first I notice is the audio isn’t playing back. I check everything and it turns out if I adjust my levels on the clip bringing them up then down it works all of the sudden. Then I brought in some 720p footage DVC ProHD and all the viewers freeze and the program while not having crashed does not respond to any commands. Then after 10 seconds or so it mysteriously starts to work again and will play back video once again.
What I hope Adobe realizes is if they don’t get this thing bullet proof as far as basic video playback it will never fly. If Mercury causes as many problems as it solves then it’s a failure. I just hope they realize that. I’m really rooting for Adobe here but PPro is not ready for prime-time IMO. Every time I use it some basic thing decides not to work on a state of the art system with all of the latest drivers.

Mr Murch may have been back peddling to some degree, who knows what his relationship is to Apple and how much if any he needs that. But to me the point that stood out the most was whether one app would ever work for everyone or not. Apple seems to be suggesting that but I think it’s a bad idea to even attempt that. Competition is good for everybody and niches will always exist it’s just the way people are. The idea of a universal editing app will never fly IMO.

Check out Crucial.com for memory if you don’t already. 32gb was around $500. Not cheap but lot better than the Mac stores I was checking.

I’ve got the best of both worlds with a Mac Pro and Boot Camp. As much as I like OSX I would have to say Win7 has an advantage in memory management. Meaning I load the exact same project in Nuke and After Effects which is a big one with a 30 second shot of 2k material and OSX will really start to bog and the disk paging becomes quite annoying. Windows seems to cut off the ram usage of the app to keep it from paging to disk. But OSX is better with the Kona in After Effects. It’s a toss up but I’m liking Win 7 better for the super memory intensive stuff. I have a 12 core with 32 GB ram BTW.

I was thinking and posted on the PPro forum a few weeks ago, that if Adobe added in a kickass color corrector to Premiere then it would get a lot of attention. I guess if Apple really doesn’t need this market then they will find out soon how that works out because they’re about to get left in the dust.

I personally think Apple will long for the day when it had a dominant video app that had to be run on macs. I think this opens a Pandora’s box for them but maybe I’m wrong.
