AJA Kona 3 and Avid MC6
Posted by Greg Jones on November 17, 2011 at 4:29 pmI downloaded the Avid Media Composer 6 Trial. Seems to work pretty good. I did notice that AJA hasn’t updated their driver page to include the Kona 3 driver. I was thinking they were going to release all their drivers the day that MC6 came out. Any word out there when the drivers will be available?

November 18, 2011 at 11:07 amI would suspect soon. Kona 3 is what we’ve been testing MC6 with as I’ve reported previously in my articles here on the Cow. It’s a thing of beauty because we can actually run FCP 7, Premiere CS 5.5.2 and Avid MC 6 on the same Mac Pro. It’s a great time to be a video editor, that’s for sure. Pick the right tool for the right job, no more converting something to anything else just to fit whatever tool you happen to own.

November 18, 2011 at 2:16 pmI’m in agreement Walter. I started out on a ‘Video Toaster’, switched to ‘Video Cube’, switched to Media 100, switched to Avid, switched to Final Cut Pro, etc. I think editing is a state of mind. The tools are there just to help you help bring your vision to life. I’m actually pretty excited about what all the manufacturers are doing. I think switching it up helps keep us editors on our toes and not stay too stagnant. I’ll probably end up with Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X, Premiere Pro, Avid, After Effects, etc. on my box. I think its smart to stay well versed in all the software.

According to Evan Schectman the next major release of FCP X will make it have all the features he’ll need to switch his company over to FCP X so NAB should be rather interesting next year. Since Apple has already let him make that statement, I’m assuming they will at least show up at the SuperMeet. If they take over again though, I’ll probably avoid the event.

November 19, 2011 at 11:56 pmIt is an interesting time! I’m now using Premiere 5.0.4 for Nikon D7000 support, 5.5.2 for XDCam and others, Final Cut for some of it’s features and hardware support (IoHD) and am putting it all together with Media 100 Suite 2.1 for it’s unmatched stability in long form, in ProRes HQ from all the rest. Media 100 Suite is still available for $595 for a few more days with a free trial period. Don’t underestimate it. All these work on the same MacPro with the same AJA LHi. The IoHD on a new 17″ MacBook Pro with FCP for lossless up and down converts between systems. Will get the Avid when drivers are available and I finish a two year project. Where one falls down, I move to the other. The glue is ProRes HQ, still the best finishing codec in my humble opinion.
