I have some good news. I’ve used a $500+ telephone coupler I think it’s called … whatever it allowed me to patch a phone conversation into a sound board … and the best results we ever got was just holding a regular mic up to the ear speaker on a regular phone on an extension in a quiet room.

Walter: Fine explaination and very accurate. I too come from Discreet Edit and have found the FCP workflow very empowering. I was lucky enough to have taken a day of training to explain some of the core features of FCP and the fact that clips on the timeline and nests are considered unique media, unattached to the original so to speak, is a biggie. Good colleague bee eph learned that the hard way, also suffering I think from some interface issues.

There is always ambience. I just did the noise reduction thing last night as a matter of fact for my podcast to try to reduce the echo. Incredible results. Give it a go.

cTRL B to toggle the enable clip option on the nest.
Sometimes that clears those things up.

Under the circumstances I’d rent a FCP 5 system and be off to the races. Take the hit and get the client taken care of.
Playing with versions and such can take a lot of troubleshooting and valuable time.

You’re fine without the slugs for black.
The only time I use a slug is when I’m assembling a show and need to drop in commercial blacks. I drop slugs on a video track which is exclusively used for commercial blacks. Then I can (a) zoom out to check I have the correct number of breaks and (b) I can measure my breaks quickly and accurately. But that’s just a personal preference FCP doesn’t require slugs at all for what you’re describing!

Your explanation is excellent thanks. It confirms what I’ve been seeing and has encouraged me to be more generous with my peaks. I’ve always been afraid of going too far above 0db (analogue) and/or -20db (digital) and I’m finding the extra headroom tempting and something I don’t fully understand.
Now if someone could explain a little of this to our Podcast producing friends that would be GREAT! How many times my ears have been blown out.. but that’s another post!
