    hi

so in order to meet the delivery of 2 versions of a multispot master, one letterbox and one anamorphic, i created a sub timeline of just the spots i had just finished editing, I then edited that sequence into 2 new sequences, one for letterbox, and one for ana.

then it got weird. I would make changes to the sub timeline of just the spots, and they would not be reflected in the main timelines. change a mix in the sub, sounds the same in the main. REconnect new graphics in the sub. “content offline” in the main

well guess waht this stupid badly written software has done! it has, on its own, created a new subtimline with exactlty the same name and never told me! when i open the subtimline i originally made by clicking on it in the bin, i see the new mix and correct graphics. BUT if i double click on the subtimeline clip in either of my main timelines, i see the OLD mix, UnREconnected graphics!

I am sorry but that is wrong! broken! and lame!

1, none of the quick or lengthy guides i read have said :oh by the way make sure you always open your nest/subtimline byt clicking on it NOT IN THE BIN.

    2. How can any computer program, any, allow mutiple versions of any data to exist WITH THE SAME NAME

    3. here is waht finally tipped me off how F***** this is. When i dragged the subtimeline clip out of the main timeline into a bin 2 SEQUENCES SHOIWED UP!

the reason i rant like this is cuz i just lost half a day, 4 hours, missed lunch, and am still repairing the mistakes do to this broken thing

NEVER USE NESTING TO RE INSERT! ALWAYS EXPORT A MOVIE AND RE IMPORT!

man…..why did discreet have to dump edit?

It is true the application doesn’t work the way you assumed it did.

Nesting does work if the sequence in the bin is edited into the other sequence by either dragging it from the bin to the new timeline or by opening the sequence in the viewer and editing it into the new sequence.

Any copy/paste functions (copying the seq from bin and pasting to a new timeline for example) or duplication functions create a new instance of the sequence.

Even duplicating a sequence with the nested seqeunce correctly linked breaks the link in the new duplication seq.

Yeah. It’s stupid and seems to have no rhyme or reason. At minimum FCP should warn or ask. Anyone used to AE and precomputes will not be happy.

It messed me up the first time I tried it, too. I found that it helped to completely clean out my render files before some changes could be made.

I don’t do nesting anymore because of it.

    > I am sorry but that is wrong! broken! and lame!< Does this mean you are going to uninstall FCP? bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Hear hear! I HATE the nesting function. It’s a surefire way to get you into BIG trouble.

Try using it on a project that is going out to film…get ready for a world of pain….

[Bob Flood] “1, none of the quick or lengthy guides i read have said :oh by the way make sure you always open your nest/subtimline byt clicking on it NOT IN THE BIN.”

If you don’t understand how this works, then you don’t understand how FCP overall works. Any clip in a timeline is a “different” version of the clip that’s in your bin or even the clip that’s in the Viewer. Once you understand this, you can really use this feature to your advantage. A typical project for me has about 40 or so nests that are all derived from the original, but are each their own unique nest.

You just have to understand how FCP is handling media which is admittedly different than most other apps out there. I personally love the way nests are handled and use them constantly in every project for anywhere from 2 to 25 video tracks in a single nest.

[Bob Flood] “2. How can any computer program, any, allow mutiple versions of any data to exist WITH THE SAME NAME”

Again, you don’t understand the basic FCP concept that everything in the bin is essentially different than everything that’s in the timeline. The nests are supposed to retain their unique name you gave them in the timeline, but they don’t right now, so you have to rename them in the bin.

[Bob Flood] “NEVER USE NESTING TO RE INSERT! ALWAYS EXPORT A MOVIE AND RE IMPORT!”

Complete waste of time, but if that’s the way you prefer to work, you can use that method. Another way to create two duplicate timelines is to simply Copy All from one timeline and Paste into a new timeline. This retains all the renders from the old timeline and you can just make your changes.

I have to deliver a full and clean pass of every show we cut here and the way we do that is to simply Duplicate the timeline in the Bin and remove the graphics from the duplicate timeline. Very quick and easy.

[Bob Flood] “man…..why did discreet have to dump edit?”

The question right now is why did you choose FCP? You have so many choices out there for NLE’s yet you chose FCP. I’m sure you investigated and tested all your options out there so if you’re not happy with the way FCP works, there’s a lot of options out there for you.

It’s a valid question when the application is not working as the person wants it to and they lament the demise of a former editing application and the title of the thread includes that this entire program is broken.

Vent away if you must, but FCP is only one of many NLE applications out there and if it doesn’t meet your requirements, and it certainly does not work for all editors in every situation, then look to the other apps to find one that suits your needs.

This is my experience too. On projects that requires lots of modifications inside the nest, I always end up having to refresh the nest manually because it won’t update. This is especially frustrating with audio, because when you do a subtle gain change for example, it’s really hard to guess if FCP updated the nest correctly.

It seems to me that the problem occur most often with projects in which I have multiple versions of the same sequence. Usualy deleting the renders in the older sequences fixes the problems, sometimes not…
