Well I have read that 4K footage scaled up is extremely solid. Same with putting 4K footage in a 1080 sequence. Remember 1080 has less total resolution than a 4K frame. So scaling 4K footage in a 4K frame holds up. Much in the same way that SD media did not scale great in an SD frame. We used to say that we could get 110-115% scale on SD footage in an SD sequence,
But with 1080 footage I scale as much as 150% and it still holds up.
With 4K then you can assume that the eye can accept the footage scaled up to 200% with no discernible loss of quality.
Now, imagine what you will be able to do with 8K!!!

Oh, so many questions…the podcast was fine, but didn’t answer a pile of questions. For example it’s pretty well documented that the iMac Pro monitor is oversaturated…so I would never use it for final color. What about the new Apple monitor? Same problem? Is there an adjustment for saturation? Because the rest of the world is not looking at content on an Apple monitor.
He likes the iMac Pro monitor but doesn’t say anything about saturation…and the iMacPros brightness is probably brighter than most people’s monitors.
I was an old tape-op in the days when we watched scopes for color and our broadcast monitors were truly calibrated. Today it really is the wild west especially with HDR color thrown in and panels made from different manufacturers with very different color rendering.
I’m not sure what is real anymore.

I’m confused by the Radeon Vega II Duo…is the advantage there that it is a single slot card? I certainly want to reserve slots if that is the case.

I’m leaning toward the 12 core….not sure apps are taking as much advantage of the processors as they do the GPU. So I’m leaning toward the dual GPU card so it only takes up one slot. Also 96 gigs of RAM should be enough for the 12 cores, but I will start with 32 gig and buy 3rd party RAM after the fact….same with hard drive….unless the drive is proprietary going with a 1TB and grow from there.
My biggest issue is OS.
I’ve had MacPros since the early 2000s and ran them for more than a decade. I know this one will probably be my last tower and will get upgrades as software and workloads demand it.

Can the new MacPro run any other OS besides Catalina? Would be nice to have a boot drive with High Sierra or even Mojave.

I still think I only need the 8 core with 128 gigs of RAM. Are there four total RAM slots or 6? Hard to tell…if there are 6 slots then the 8 core makes no sense, unless Apple has some new slick way of handling 6 slots of RAM in an 8 core machine.
So then it would be a 12 core model (slower base processor speed) with 96 gigs but I would buy it with 32 gigs and buy aftermarket RAM assuming I can.
Then the upgrade to the Vega II with 32 Gigs….I can upgrade later…its a MacPro right?
1TB HD to start and Apple Care and it’s around $10k. Not terrible since I know it will future proof me and be upgradable for another decade (retirement).

I’m coming in around $9100. 8 core seems to be enough and I assume I can buy third party RAM for this thing? Went with 32 gig and the upgraded video card. Plus Apple Care.

My audio guy said rubberbanding does not come into his software. But dissolves between clips to and audio gain adjustments and pan settings come over.

I have a 2009 MacPro Tower flashed to a 5,1 and souped up to the max that can still run Final Cut 7 and other older apps with a dual boot SSD with ElCapitan and High Sierra. Got to keep that around. But my workhorse is the iMac Pro which is great, but if they will give me something in a trade in that is worth my while it makes more sense to me to have the new MacPro which would be upgradable.

Also I was thinking I might trade in my iMac Pro for a Mac Pro but when I put in my iMac Pro serial number it didn’t come up in the database and said I could only recycle it….um, no!
But that might take the sting off the cost of the new Mac Pro if I could get a couple thousand for my $4500 iMac Pro which is a little over a year old. And I’d have a truly upgradable machine.
Makes sense to me!
Let’s go Apple.
