What format is it in now? Codec? I assume you are on a PC. If you have Quicktime try exporting the clip to PhotoJpeg at abour 75% and it should give you a pretty small but good looking file for the Mpeg encoder.

I’m in the same boat Mike…don’t get 3D soon and I’m gonna get mowed over. I have a question for you. Are you planning to man the 3D ship yourself or hire someone? Because I think I recall you just moved into a larger production company and I wonder if your workload will enable you to really get your head around the software while you also handle compositing, design and editing responsibilities…oh and management of your company.
So what’s your strategy after you get the package you want?

I could have used a couple of ease in or out keyframes and the ones and zeros kind of clashed with the imagery…but overall it was a good little experiment and I applaud you for taking the time to build it…and of course, to show it to us all grazing in the pasture.

The 6 pixel difference you mention is actually on the top and bottom…..there are 6 additional lines of video with CCIR 601 486 footage. DV and DVCPro50 along with MPEG-2 cut it down to 480. Should you use the CCIR 601 setting? It depends on which codec you will use for the final output. If you want to work in standard DV then use the DV setting (same if you use DVCPro50). If you want to use a 486 codec like Apple’s uncompressed 8 bit then you will set it up with the 486 CCIR 601 setting.
It is codec dependent not source tape dependent.
The black on the left side could have been caused during the dub from Beta if one of the deck’s sync was off a bit. There is a horizontal sync setting that could push the image to the left or right. This is not so unusual actually.
But the 6 pixel difference is vertical not horizontal.

You are right…there is a free Flash 8 encoder (that is notably not very good…hence it is free). It is quite hard to find on their site. You should look into Sorenson Squeeze or even the latest version of cleaner that both have a much better encoder for FCP to flash encoding.

I wonder if it will allow a dual-boot state with both OS running at the same time, like Virtual PC. I like this option because I can directly copy files back and forth between OS’s on the same box.
Think of it….encode with ProCoder on the XP side and author in DVDSP while it encodes.

What they weren’t going to let people do is install the Mac OS on a PC. They never said they would’t allow Windows to be installed on their Intel machines.

When you say “arrive” do you mean that is what the clip details say in FCP after importing?
Or is that what the Movie properties say in QT player? I would open them in QT player and see what they are in movie properties.
