Yes…sort of. After you make your PJPEG movie, simply open it in QT player and assuming you have the pro version and Flip4Mac you simply choose the Export feature out of Quicktime and select Windows Media as the format…

That’s it…works perfect on the PC.

Flip4Mac still won’t let you render out directly from the AE timeline. You should first render out either a frames version at the appropriate frame size to either the QT H264 codec or maybe PhotoJPEG and then take that file and rip a WMV using Flip4Mac without scaling….this has given me the best results.

You can start with Quicktime H264. Make the size around 320 x 240 at medium quality and they will look pretty good and be fairly small. If you can get the Flip4Mac Windows media converter for your Mac you will also be able to encode to Windows Media and with both you will be covered.

You are right that compression is an art, really. There are so many settings including a good understanding how various codecs respond to different clips. and there are two sides of the equation…video and audio.

I think it will be much bigger than DVD-Audio and SACD. I think consumers are wowed by the image of HD but not by the advantages of a few extra bytes on their music track. Actually, we’re pretty used to low rez audio with iTunes.

I haven’t heard anyone talk about which format might win on the DVD-burnable front…I give that one to HD-DVD, but they will inevitably both be out there. Look, we have DVCPro 50 and DVCAM and we all have to play nice with both of them. We have DVCProHD and HDCAM..ditto. I am currently backing up project files, AE files, PSD etc to DVD-R. It’s a pretty good system, but I wish I had higher capacity. Enter either of the HD disc formats and I have my upgrade. It will be interesting what Apple decides.

I am not as much concerned with what movie to buy, or if they will let me copy it etc. I want a reliable burnable disc format with 25 gigs or more. I think we will all have that.

But economy is important too. Which ones players will be cheaper? so far it looks like that nod is to HD-DVD. How about media? Cmon, people still complain about the cost of DVCAM tapes versus mini DV. You think it won’t come down to price…a little?

I think the better value will win, and people will pay attention to that.

I do not think either format will go the way of DVD-Audio or SACD. Seeing is believing…evidently hearing is not believing.

There is your answer. In a recent PC Magazine John Dvorak stated very clearly that the Plextor drives are hands down the best drive out there….he stated several compelling reasons and certainly got my attention.

Get the Plextor’s for the work you are asking them to do.

Encoding on the PC for Quicktime would require that you have Quicktime installed and if you upgrade to Quicktime Pro you should be able to export your clip to the H264 codec and get a great result. As for MPEG-1, can’t you export right out of Premier to MPEG-1?

I wouldn’t bother with MPEG-1…I would get Quicktime and upgrade to Quicktime Pro then put the WMV and QT files on your site and you have almost everyone covered.

Yup, you have your fields reversing. If you are feeding the encoder lower field 720 x 486 footage and it is making 720 x 480 MPEG-2 then the fields get reversed. You need to find a setting in the encoder to either reverse fields or specify what the input is.

Just download the latest QT player on the Windows machine…works for my client.

But not in Windows Media player…probably never…

That is probably the most impressive demonstration of streaming I have ever seen. The Carlton Draught “Big Ad” is awesome as well!

Don’t know what those guys are doing under the hood, but it clearly works. I want my site to use it for sample clips.
