In the comp settings isn’t there a Preserve Frame rate check box?

Ok, there is no longer MPEG-1 on export out of FCP. I did try an MP4 and it turned out pretty good. What is the compatibility of MP4 on a PC? Is it pretty universal with Windows Media Player 9? Because I could make a nice looking 640 x 480 clip that looked fantastic.
But with cleaner I still would go with MPEG-1.

For pretty much universal PC playback MPEG-1 is the way to go. Nearly every computer still alive will play it and it will scale pretty good. If you have Compressor 2.0 it will make MPEG-1 clips. Cleaner is ok too. I shoot for around 3000kbps and make the movies 480 x 360. In cleaner you can crop the sides a bit which will help the overall image. If you use cleaner also slightly add some brightness and perhaps some saturation.
Windows Media is ok, but you’ll need Flip4Mac (not a bad purchase) to export Windows Media 9 clips directly from the timeline. For those I use 640 x 480 and go max quality 2 pass VBR.
Still MPEG-1 will allow everyone to view the files, they will play on slower PCs and will scale to full screen pretty well. Windows Media might give you a better looking file but does require you to be able to export to WMV out of FCP ($179 for the Flip4Mac Pro package).
Stay away from Quicktime…too many PC users will not have it and you will get nothing but complaints that the movies you provided will not play on their computers.

In two different expeiences with the same monitors two widescreens side by side is way too much horizontal space for mousing around. With the Dells I believe the 24 widescreen and the 17″ 4×3 are the exact same height, so side by side they are a perfect match. This setup is ideal for FCP, AE and photoshop and reduces the extra wideness of the two widescreens. And you’ll save a few bucks.

If you are using Reference movies that have a lot of clips, renders etc, you might try exporting a self contained clip and try that. I can definately see any encoder having problems getting thru a batch of ref clips with lots of referencing.
Not sure what error -47 is, but the File Busy note implies it cannot access a file while exporting…is FCP still open while you run the batch? Try quitting FCP and try it again.

More on topic I suggest Maxell….In my opinion the best DVD-R media out there.

Did you say 18 mbps? Isn’t that way too high? Are you planning to make a DVd with that MPEG2 file? Conventional wisdom is not to exceed 6.2 mbps.
Also, in QT you might want to check the High quality setting under the movie properties menu. MPEG2 files look fine on all my Macs.

I’m surprised…cleaner is notorious for making the most lousy MPEG-2 files on the planet. Do you trus the other end that the files actually look good? I’ll bet dollars to donuts they don’t.
Try compressor, BitVice or Main Concept on the Mac and see if your results aren’t WAY better.
