  • How to make nested comp with different frame rate play 1:1 ???

Posted by John Rowe on April 28, 2006 at 1:58 am

I’ve got a 25 fps comp nested within a 30 fps comp but I want AE to match the frames 1:1 rather than do a retime thing.

At the moment This is what I’m getting:
When 30fps Comp is at frame 1 then the nested 25fps Comp is at frame 1
When 30fps Comp is at frame 11 then the nested 25fps Comp is at frame 9
When 30fps Comp is at frame 30 then the nested 25fps Comp is at frame 25

Whereas this is what I want to happen:
When 30fps Comp is at frame 1 then the nested 25fps Comp is at frame 1
When 30fps Comp is at frame 11 then the nested 25fps Comp is at frame 11
When 30fps Comp is at frame 30 then the nested 25fps Comp is at frame 30

I can’t just change the frame rate of the 25fps comp to be 30fps because it itself contains other 25fps comps and footage interpreted as 25fps.

So what I really want is to apply “Interpret Footage” to a Comp rather than footage if you get my meaning.

See what I mean? Any ideas apart from rendering the 25fps comp out and then importing it into the 30fps comp and using Interpret Footage to set its frame rate to 30?

    Thanks,
    John

In the comp settings isn’t there a Preserve Frame rate check box?

    Maybe that would do it.

    Nope, that didn’t fix it.

Good suggestion though; I’d never even noticed that switch but it doesn’t seem to help solve my problem.

    Thanks,

Hows about rendering it out and importing then change the frame rate…

This is just an idea: Apply the “posterize Time” effect on your 25fps comp layer that is in your 30fps comp. Set your frame rate to 30 fps.

No matter what though, I don’t think the motion in your 25 fps comp will look smooth in your 30 fps comp unless you use something like Twixtor to interpert the frames, FYI

This is true. Smooth 29.97fps from 25fps isn’t going to happen without Twixtor or Magic Bullet. I’ve been there too many times to have not found a solution.

Thanks everyone for your ideas. Looks like I’ll have to go for the old render out and re-import trick.

Shame, I thought there’d be a more elegant solution.
