Hey guys. I have the Kona LH and the breakout box. I run the component outputs to a Sony PVM 14U SD NTSC monitor for SD monitoring. I use the loop outs on the monitor and run them to a Dell 24 inch LCD for HD monitoring. Works great. the Sony SD monitor only shows a bunch of diagonal lines (no image) but the LCD displays HD material via the component signal just fine.

What do you mean you can’t loop an HD signal thru the Sony monitor? I do it all the time!

August 29, 2007 at 1:23 am in reply to: Producer & Director Day Rates

I think in our market (Madison) a producer day rate is anywhere between $400 and $700 a day. For directing, it depends on the project, but for most B2B video projects I would say that $1000 a day or more is pretty high. Budgets these days are more like $800 a day for typical corporate video directing. I can see more for a regional TV spot with a higher profile and when the director is chosen for a particular skill.

Most corporate clients would be surprised to see $1000 a day for producing a corporate video, and equally surprised if the directing rate was more than that much. Again, depends on budget, profile of the piece and perhaps distribution.

Don’t forget that Adobe is also concurrently developing Apollo. This addition of H.264 to Flash is probably only part of the equation. Having complete compatibility with H.264 will really let Apollo sing.

I pretty much alway like what Adobe does, including adding layers to Photoshop in version 3, buying Cosa back in the early 1990s and making the Flash interface more like AfterEffects.

What you first thought might work possibly will. If you nest a composition that consists of graphics and not footage and want to use time remap to slow down or speed up the moves to hit new music, this will work and will look perfect. It will behave just as if you had slid keframes down. Use your collapse transformations button on the nested comp and time remap away. Render as usual.

I have done this and it worked perfectly. As long as you are not time remapping critical footage and only graphics that are moving with keyframes, time remap will do exactly what you need it to.

Can’t you just nest the video so that you can use the converter, then edit in the audio tracks? There should be no problem just editing in the audio only from the NTSC sequence into the new PAL sequence.

Hmmm…sounds like we are all talking about backing up the files. We backup the project files, graphics and pre-renders etc, including most but not all of the actual media to a hard drive. We also back up the project files without the big media files to a DVD. If it is short form, we include a DVD if we authored one for the project in the backups. This way we have two copies of both critical project files. And since I don’t really trust hard drives for critical backups, we make the DVD data backups too.

We use hot swappable 250 gig SATA drives. We might move to the 500s soon. Also, we are primarily a SD shop so we don’t have a ton of HD rez footage to backup, and we use DVCPro50 and DVCPro HD codecs for our projects.

We also archive the final edited program to DVCAM tape. Many times we can simply do a 5 minute upload of the show to make a change etc. Rarely does it require a full media restore.

We do not charge for backups per se but we do charge for time restoring the project and add about a half hour of our “Prep Time” rate to every invoice for doing the backups and covering media costs. I would rather roll items like backups into our service rates than line-iteming them on the invoice.

Cleaner 6.5.1 is an awesome compressor app…..get the 6.5.1 u0date and your problems will be solved. There are better apps today, but 6.5.1 is still our old reliable batch encoder. The update solved all our issues. I use it all the time to make FLVs for clients and they swear I am using the new On2 Flash 8 encoder. They have used our services to solve issues they had with other service providers in town. Cleaner 6.5.1 will get it done.

There are better, but it is still a functional app for batch encoding.

Yes. However DVD SP will also want to install compressor and Batch monitor so if you want to keep your current apps just pull them out of the apps folder temporarily or rename them…then install DVD SP and bring them back in.

  • I like to think of these kinds of things in two ways. Will I be asked to do this kind of thing in the future, and should I find a workflow that is outside my facility to get it done. This way I can determine if I should really be set up to do this sort of thing…once it’s up and running you can charge for it, and it gets clients thinking about using you rather than another guy. This can be big, and might mean the difference between getting the next job or not.

I recently took on short run DVD and CD duplication because I was asked enough if we did it that I finally got the equipment to take on those jobs. It’s worked out very well so far.

Betacam isn’t dead yet, folks. I’m putting new heads on my deck right now. Probably the last time, but we make a lot of Beta dubs around these parts…

  • I believe you could use the M-Connect for machine control and timecode pass thru. Then you would have to take the S-Video out and the RCA Audio out of the M25 to the Beta Deck…certaily not ideal. Another way would be to get a second SDI to Component analog and take the M-Connect SDI for the conversion…again not great.

Better yet, IMO, would be to use the SDI out of the M-Connect and dub to DVCAM. You keep the digital audio at true 48k and most of the picture quality. Not gonna do what your client asked for, however.

If you have a Kona card and the breakout box you could run the SDI out of the M-Connect into the breakout box. Put FCP in Digitize mode and run the component and XLR out to the Beta deck. Sort of an EE setup using the Kona as your convertor. This would tie up your edit system while it dubbed.

To go from DVCProHD to Betacam we actually use an old Aurora Pipe system to send the SDI from the DVCProHD deck (downconverted in the deck to SD) into the Pipe Pro, then take the component out and XLR to the Beta. On the Panasonic deck I have a timecode out so I run that to the Beta and put it in External Regen. Has worked great.

    That’s all I have…
