The extra resolution of 1080 makes a significant difference for green screen shooting. I’d also consider the ammount of motion blur involved with progressive and this may be a case where 1080i might yield better results.

The shutter speed is simply changing the ammount of blur present, not really the type of blur. What you are saying is that you think less motion blur looks more filmic than more motion blur which looks more video. Valid opinion but some would differ and feel that interlaced video has less motion blur than progressive capture and that motion blur helps to create that filmic feel.

You might also want to double check the information re the HVX and 16gb cards. My advice from Panasonic is that the HVX will require a firmware update to use the 16gb card. I was told that this would have to be done by Panasonic, but maybe not.

February 9, 2007 at 1:49 am in reply to: Best Practices for using multiple P2 cards

There are a lot of best practices to follow. Make sure you have labelled your cards. I also label the end of my cards with a different coloured dot so I know which card I have just inserted and which was was already in there.

If I’m managing card clips or formatting, I always eject everything other than the card Im fiddling with.
Glue the rubber boot into the P2 cards box and make sure that the cards are only ever in the box or the camera.
Always write protect the card once you remove it from the camera, esp if going to a computer.

Just some off the top of my head.

    Hi Bill,

I’ve no experience with the FS100 though I will vouch for the HVX in cold weather using P2 cards. I’ve done a lot of alpine shooting with the camera with P2 it is great. Very easy on the camera batterys also which seem to run for ever, even in the cold, much better than tape.

I am using shake these days. For basic stuff such as stabilising footage and slow-mo it produces great results. F

    Thanks Walter and Uli,

I’m obviously going to have to look at the cards and try to get a demo to decide which is right for our needs. Your advice is much appreciated. The G5 quad is almost new and so wont be going anywhere for a while, we will have to make it pay for itself before we upgrade.

Upconverting and crossconverting could be useful but perhaps further down the line more so than now. Perhaps we will look at that facility for our next suite.

    Thanks again.

there is no P2 card with firewire out, however the camera itself has a firewire out through which you can capture live into AVID, FCP etc. You may be thinking of the mythical cineporter which is similar to the firestore but which interfaced with the P2 slot. No idea where the cineporter is, it has never made it to the market. In the meantime the firestore has taken off and has been getting better and better.

My personal preference is for more P2 cards. The more data on a single device, without back-up, the less comfortable I become. The buzz at present is that the 8gb cards are about to have their price slashed. It can’t come soon enough for me.

The previous post appeared to be discouraging even the presence of an OIS whether it be on or off. Should three be any issues with the movement of the OIS if it is switched off or am I misreading the post?
