The HVX will shoot 24p natively in 720p mode,but not in 1080i mode. If you shot 24p in 1080, it will be embedded in a 29.97 stream, meaning you’ll have to click the tab that says “Removed Advanced Pulldown” in the Log and Transfer tool. Try reimporting it with that checked.
To answer why anyone would shoot 29.97 in HD, you should disassociate interlacing with HD. There is interlaced HD, and there is progressive HD. Both work within different applications. I’m currently cutting a program for Spike shot 1080 29.97 because that’s the spec the network wanted it delivered at. It just depends on the delivery requirement, among other things.

Knowing what formats you will be working with will be essential to building a system and workflow. General rules about buying a system, buy as fast a system as you can afford at the time, this will keep the longevity of the system as high as possible (no matter it will be become obsolete in a couple years anyway).
Storage wise, one or two hard drives is not likely to cut it. You should look into RAID solutions. Cal Digit, and Maxx Digital make nice ones.
If you plan to do critical color correction, you should also look into a capture card. I recommend AJA’s products.
Regarding tech issues, Final Cut handles media quite differently from Avid, and it sounds like you could use a full professional consultation. That’s soon to come eventually from this post, that you might want to look into hiring a professional consultant to really get you up to speed.

It’s an issue with Perian. Go into your System Preferences and remove Perian and import. You easily reinstall Perian when you’re done. That was how I remedied it on my system.

4 2gb should be fine. That is weird. Are they different manufacturers? Likewise, are they different speed ram? (I.E. one being 677 and the other 800)

I once had this issue on an eight core mac pro. High quality was greyed out, which made for bad tape layoffs. we opened the tower and noticed it was setup with 10 gigs of ram. 4 2gb modules and 2 1gb modules. As soon as we pulled the 2 1gb modules, were able to select high quality and all was well.

That’s about right. Magic Bullet filters (at least last time I used them) on an Intel Core 2 Duo generally rendered at a rate of an hour per minute of video. I’ve never used the image stabilizer but I would imagine that’s a pretty hefty render too.
To give you an example, grant it, this was on a PC based Core 2 Duo system, rendering out of After Effects as opposed to Final Cut. I render a 45 minute band performance using Magic Bullet’s deartifactor and one of their looks effects. It took about three days.
It sure made the DV footage look killer, but it comes at a cost, being render time.

Using OSX 10.5.6, FCP 6.0.5 and Kona 3 with Kona software 6.0.3, but also saw it with Kona software 6.0.2. Also, the Kona firmware is the 64 bit DMA.
It’s pretty sporadic, and is fixed by a quick recapture. It sounded like Robert’s experiencing this more regularly.

I’ve been experiencing this a lot lately with DVCPRO HD shot on an HDX 900. I haven’t found any pattern (it happens on both very full and brand new raid sets). It’s fairly inconsistent, and not very frequent so I’ve just set those off sync clips offline, and recaptured.
