Here’s a weird one. After checking my ram configuration, making sure my Kona firmware is up to date I’ve the weirdest thing. If I turn on Kona’s realtime timecode burn in, I can monitor audio and video. The audio does not crackle or drop frames, and it’s all playing out of the Kona card. If I turn off the timecode burn, I can’t play audio out of the card without dropping frames. I can play video out of the card, and play audio out of the built in line out, but obviously I can’t do that to layback my masters, nor can I layback my masters with a timecode burn in.
Kona software version 6.5.1 though I’ll try upgrading the software to the new 7.0 FCS 2 (Final Cut 6.0.5), OSX 10.5.7, 12 gb ram, first generation mac pro, Cal Digit RAID Card with a near empty Cal Digit HD Element.

What happens when you try digitizing to another codec? If it happens just the same with another a codec, you could at least write off it being a problem with pro res. Plus, if it’s happening with all codecs, I would check your REF termination.

I’ve done it via RS422 to a Panasonic HD1400, but it always seemed to start laying time code late (I.E. I’d set it to lay timecode starting at 00:58:30;00 and it’d start more like 00:58:32;00 or so). So I prefer striping my tapes manually.

Try taking the SD card out of the camera, and importing them from a card reader.

The Sony log and transfer tool is separate and only for use with XDCAM EX (and possibly XDCAM but I’m not positive) but I was referring to the Log and Transfer tool within Final Cut Pro. (Shift + Apple + 8) You might need to be in vtr mode on the camera in order for FCP to see the files. Likewise, if you have a card reader, you could try that.
I’ve used an SDHC card reader to grab AVCHD files off of an SD card used in a Panasonic SD-9. Different cameras, but the same concept.

It certainly seems like your drives should be fast enough, but I thought that only Quad G5 Power PCs could capture Pro Res. That might be your problem. I’ve certainly captured SD pro res on a Dual G5, but never HD.

Are you trying to capture to a single hard drive or a RAID setup? How many drives in your RAID? Are your hard drives more than 20% full? Need more information on your system, and the settings in FCP would help too.

I would do it their way. Or at the very least, use Digital Rebellions FCS remover to first remove Final Cut Studio and then install FCS fresh. This what I’ll do until Snow Leopard comes out. Once Snow Leopard comes out I’ll definitely re-install the entire OS fresh.

Nobody said it was NECESSARY. It’s just a good idea. You’re absolutely right, it’s an involved process. That doesn’t make it any less of a good idea.
