I always black my own tapes before I lay anything off in our machine room from the deck. I read about the Black and Code option in Final Cut Pro but the tape does not get the code I type into the dialog box. Does this only work with firewire decks?

I’ve done it via RS422 to a Panasonic HD1400, but it always seemed to start laying time code late (I.E. I’d set it to lay timecode starting at 00:58:30;00 and it’d start more like 00:58:32;00 or so). So I prefer striping my tapes manually.

On my Beta deck I set the code to about 10 seconds before my timeline start, and I get perfect frame accurate dubs. I use a Kona LH and RS422.

Nope…the one thing is DOESN’T work for is Firewire. I black and code Beta, Digibeta and HDCAM SR tapes fine.

Make sure that you have deck control, and most importantly, BLACK BURST Sync Generator.

Oooh, I forgot that, yes you need a BB generator, and watch out for Bob Zelin if you don’t!

More modern decks have bars/black generators built in. eg digibeta/HDCAM etc.

And if your Sony decks are on a patchbay, dead patch the deck and it will record black from it’s internal generator
