    I received a drive with the contents of 3 P2 cards, each containing HD footage of a shoot that happened today. The log and capture preview in FCP shows pristine video, but when I transcode a select I wind up with an interlaced MOV file.

    The Log and Capture shows the video format at 1080i60 and the video rate at 29.97. I don’t know why anyone would use a Panasonic HVX and shoot at 29.97 if they wanted HD footage, but that seems to be the case here – 1060i60 with the i for interlaced, right? The producer thinks the footage is 24, but she is wrong….I mean FCP wouldn’t lie on the Format or Vid Rate, right?

    My question is, is there a setting I can adjust so the transcoded file is exported as 24f? I can’t have these interlacing issues anymore, my work is plagued with them!

    The HVX will shoot 24p natively in 720p mode,but not in 1080i mode. If you shot 24p in 1080, it will be embedded in a 29.97 stream, meaning you’ll have to click the tab that says “Removed Advanced Pulldown” in the Log and Transfer tool. Try reimporting it with that checked.

    To answer why anyone would shoot 29.97 in HD, you should disassociate interlacing with HD. There is interlaced HD, and there is progressive HD. Both work within different applications. I’m currently cutting a program for Spike shot 1080 29.97 because that’s the spec the network wanted it delivered at. It just depends on the delivery requirement, among other things.

    I would recommend that you read your HVX manual. It should explain the frame rates that the camera records, and that camera can only record 1080 as 60i, 29.97.

    If you record 30P or 24P, your progressive frames are recorded inside of a 60i, 29.97 video stream. This is explained in the HVX manual, and it is not exotic or unique to that camera, it is fairly common with 1080 formats and is a legacy from tape.

    Well, Richard answered it well enough. I had typed up a nice long explaination/rant about this (thinking that HD isn’t interlaced…really…) but the post was lost when I tried posting it.

    HD can be interlaced…I am working with that format now. HD can be Progressive…I have worked with that in the past. The issue might be that the producer wanted progressive HD but didn’t communicate that need to the DP. They, like you, might have just assumed that all HD was progressive.

    Or it might be that they shot 1080pA24 and you just didn’t remove pulldown (and option in the Log and Transfer preferences) when you imported. But if the footage isn’t flagged as progressive with pulldown, then it was shot interlaced, and to convert it you’ll need to import first, then convert using Compressor.
