Ok, yes, I agree. I do find myself using this at times, I have to admit. Pretty handy actually.Â
My comment was more aimed at full auto focus all the time while recording. This I would not want.Richard Cooper

“Um yeah who cares- no 24p and Alpha mount…”
Agreed…
“…the good news is that it will have AF in video mode, something that Canon should start to implement in their DSLR’s!”
“AF” (Auto Focus) has NO PLACE in video production. Auto anything really has NO value, but AutoFocus is the last thing that these cameras need.

Here it is borrowed from the TUAW page: how-to-burn-a-lion-boot-disc
* Use Finder to locate the Mac OS X Lion installer, right-click and select “Show Package Contents”
* Find the SharedSupport folder and look for a file names “InstallESD.dmg”. This is the Lion Boot Disc image.
* Copy the “InstallESD.dmg” file to another folder such as your desktop.
* Launch Disk Utility and click the burn button
* Select the “InstallESD.dmg” copy as the image to burn, insert a DVD, and in a few minutes you will have a brand new Lion Boot Disc.I would imagine that the same would be possible with FCPX… No?

June 3, 2011 at 12:48 am in reply to: how to compress 1080i sequence for progressive output to YouTube? Thanks for the info David… it makes sense…
I was assuming HD resolutions for upload. I don’t even bother with anything less than 720p.Cheers!

Hi Ben, If you trans-coded a 15 minute 1080p video file to ProRes and it ends up at 40 Gigs you may have accidentally encoded to ProRes 4444.
A ProRes 422 video file, assuming 24p should only be approx 1 gig a minute ie: 15 minutes = 15 gigs. At 30p it would be about 1.3 gigs a minute… or 15 minutes = 19.5 gigs
Now, playing back 4 streams of 1080p ProRes files all at once, assuming 4/ ProRes 422 30p video streams, is going to require a RAID system and would NOT play off of an internal MBP system drive or even an external FireWire drive. You will need something with a throughput approaching 100MB/sec or more.
Hope this helps, Good Luck!Richard Cooper

Go with ProRes 422 or even ProRes LT
They will both play back fine from single drive without issue… unless your laptop has other issues.
I just did this exact thing for a one time theater screening and it worked flawlessly playing a 35 minute ProRes 422 1080p video from the desktop of a 2 YO MBP (Fairly clean install of Snow Leopard) and a DVI cable directly into the projector. I cant say how accurate the color and gamma where coming out of the GUI of the MBP but I can say it was not bad looking at all.Richard Cooper

June 2, 2011 at 10:47 pm in reply to: how to compress 1080i sequence for progressive output to YouTube? If your final output is a progressive format then I would copy your edit into a progressing time line (DVCProHD 1080p/30 or ProRes and just use the de-interlace filter on the interlaced footage.
Or de-interlace upon output to h.264 from your existing sequence.
Either way you will want to de-interlace before you upload for web.
Good Luck!

Yes, the 7D is all auto everything when it comes to audio… and even if you could control the gain it would NOT be an option for proper audio recording. It is just not built for Pro Audio. You really need to invest in a separate audio recorder (like a Sound Devices 702 recorder if you are serious… or if on a budget a Zoom H4n) and sync in Post. Right now you can use Plural Eyes ($99) to sync but it looks like FCPX will have this capability built into it when it when it is released next month.

“I have been conforming my footage to 23.98 and not 24…”
Excellent!
“With my final output being 23.98 would it be better to work with a 60 fps timeline and mix my clips in there?”
NO
“Or a 23.98 time line and mix my 60 fps footage and 23.98 footage into my project that way? Or should I work with my 60 fps footage in a 60 fps time line, then nest it into a 23.98 time line so it can render correctly before outputting it?”
Actually NONE of these. If 23.98 is your final output then 60P is NOT what you want to work with at all on the time line. If you shoot everything over-cranked in 60p for slow mo (remember to multiply your shutter speed accordingly) then conform EVERYTHING to 23.98, all will be good. Then, if you want any of these shots to be regular speed DO NOT go back to the original 60p clip but rather speed up the conformed 23.98 clip on the 23.98 time line by 250%. This will give you the best look rather than that very “video” look of 60p.
Hope this helps…
