Did you get it to work, yet?

Make sure cam is unplugged from computer, switch cam to the proper export setting, then plug in and try. The import settings need to be what is stated earlier in the thread.

    Hi Marianne,

When you are in FCP6 (6 is what I have) make sure the Audio/Video Settings are: HDV-1080i60/HDV/HDV Firewire Basic for the first three settings.

Disconnect Canon Camera from computer and make sure it’s “output” says HDV (not DV).

Then plug back in and turn it on.

Check System Monitor to make sure your computer shows that a Canon Camera is connected through Firewire.

Go back into FCP and “Command-8” to launch the Log & Capture. It should see it… it got frustrating for me, too, but it’ll work…

Make sure the camera is set for playback in “HDV” (not DV). Also, make sure camera is on. It sounds like your Easy Settings in FCP are correct, although I only have FCP6.

I’ve had issues in FCP (something I’ve overlooked) but iMovie ususally recognizes the camera immediately
    with no problems.

    Thank you for responding, Steve!

For a standard DV/DVCPro NTSC file, export a Self Contained QuickTime Movie from FCP. That is if you export from a DV sequence. If your sequence is DVCPro 50, then your file will be much larger and will be DVCPro 50. No need to convert any further.

Okay, good, this is what I did here. I was concerned how big the file was, as the Festival wanted this for the actual exhibition, not the screening. Dave recommended delivering on a flash drive.

bring that file into Compressor and select a DVD preset. You say your video is only 22 minutes. Select the appropriate setting. Personally I would use single pass with a bit rate of 6.5. That’s customizing the original setting. As you see, after compressor is done you will get an m2v and an ac3 file. … burn a DVD disc.

Yes, this all worked out great. Again, wondered about the uploading of the two files; Festival guy said upload .mov or m4v for screening.

    Thanks again everyone!

    Thanks, guys…

Yes, I used the DVD preset in Compressor set for DVD-Best Quality 90 minutes.
It takes the movie and makes it into .ac3 and .m2v.

There are settings in Compressor for making DVCPRO50 movies (.mov) but the
file size will be over 9 GB, which seems awful big for a 22 min movie.

Am I off track in Compressor somewhere?

When I burn the DVCPRO50>Compressor files (the .m2v and the .ac3) to a disk, it looks
    great on the TV set.

    Thank you for responding, Rafael!

    I’m still a little confused. It’s a 22 minute movie.

    1) When I render using Compressor in DVCPRO50 compression, I get two files… .m2v and .ac3
It’s less than 1 GB but it’s two files which have to be burned.

    2) When I render in DVCPRO50 compression as a Quicktime movie, I get a 10 GB .mov file

    3) When I render in NONE compression, I got a 44 GB .mov file…

    4) Not sure how to get this movie as “DVCPRO-NTSC” and have it be in ONE file…

    Haha, thanks Dave!

Yeah, steep learning curve for me. I figured 720×540 matched 4:3 in aspect ratio and 720×480 matched 3:2 in aspect ratio. But I’m looking at them side-by side now and there is no distortion.

Yeah, I will stick w this DVCPRO50 footage.

    Many thanks!

I was set on regular DV/DVCPRO-NTSC but have now switched it to the DVCPRO50-NTSC in Sequence Settings…

    Thank you gents very much!

    Thanks again Dave and David,

I have changed the original archival MPEG-2 directly into DVCPRO50 using Streamclip.

This creates a MUCH higher quality clip than the .M2V but is 8 GB to the M2V file size of 1 GB.

I can bring this into FCP or were you referring to changing my Sequence Settings to “DVCPRO50”
    as the compressor of choice?

Many thanks, guys. I really appreciate the tips…

    Hi Dave and David,

I used 720×540 because all this old footage was 4:3. And still be able to burn it into DVD format,
so maintained 720 in the horizontal.

Should I have stuck with 640×480? If I used 720×480 I’d have some black bar letterboxing.
