    Thanks Dave and David,

I forgot to say, the “scratch disk” is a Hard Drive #3 in MacPro. The files and resources are
    on Hard Drive #2 MacPro.

Would it help if scratch and files were all on same disk?

    Thanks!

Thank you Dave and David for responding.

The footage I’m using is archival old film footage. Project is set up at 720×540.
The archival b/w footage is all 4:3. Some of it was .flv I converted to .mov and
some of the archival was .mpeg 2 which I demuxed into .m2v and .aiff.

It all seemed fine until I got to a piece I got from from YouTube at about 9 minute
mark, then it suddenly got really slow.

    Thank you for your help!

    Hey Robb,

Hey I think I finally figured it out (I’m still learning).

When capturing HDV the frame size is 1440×1080 (4/3) and the pixel ratio is 1440×1080 (4/3).
When these are multiplied they make 16/9 for the eventual HDV. So that makes sense now.

So if I want this footage of old Super-8 to come out in a 4/3 ratio, I need to make the frame size 1080/1080 (1/1) and leave pixel ratio at 1440×1080 (4/3), so when multiplied this gives a final image resolution of 1440/1080 and it comes out in 4/3 format. I think I understand this now.

Seems to all be working. Yeah, I think importing the 640×480 plus the HDV screwed things up the first time.

    Thanks for your help,

    Richard

I tossed the file and started over WITHOUT loading the 640×480 piece of footage. It seems to be sitting in the frame correctly now…

    Thx!

    Thanks for responding Robb.

Basically, I was thinking I could have this 4:3 video rendered in a 16:9 frame if I had to.

I can’t figure out why image is squashed. Here is a screenshot: https://www.chenarch.com/test_rc.jpg

    Thanks again,

March 17, 2010 at 9:23 pm in reply to: problem with cross dissolve

If you use Mac, you can hold down “Control” and click on the seam between the two clips. A cross-dissolve will appear. Then you can double click on the cross-dissolve to get a dialogue box for it.

Once it’s there, you can go to Effects Menu and toggle it to another type of dissolve if you want.

To get rid, click it once to highlight then Delete…

  • I was getting this message “Operation Not Allowed” when trying to insert footage into the Timeline.

I tried a few basic things like quitting and restarting. Then I noticed I had been trying to insert
footage that had sound into the Timeline with one audio channel on and one audio channel off.
Since I am using a soundtrack, I didn’t need any audio channels on. So turned them both off.

I realize you are “exporting”, not doing a mid-stream operation like “insert”, but maybe this thread can help others…

March 16, 2010 at 2:47 pm in reply to: Cannot capture HDV to FCP

    Hi Adrian,

Thank you for responding to the question about capture from the Canon Vixia HDV30 to FCP6.

I did finally figure it out.

It was a problem I had with the camera setting. I was suspicious that the camera was saying
“DV” when I put it in Playback and tried to download. Essentially trying to download DV into
HDV settings. FCP6 was not happy with this. Canon tech support told me I had everything set
    properly.

Finally I did this: I had to unplug the FW cable from the camera, which only then allowed me to set the Playback/Capture to “HDV”. Once the setting was changed I plugged back in the FW connecting cable
    and it worked.

This time I wrote down the solution.

Thanks again for responding, and if anyone else has this problem maybe this thread will help them.

    Best regards,

    Richard

    Chris,

Can you tell me what settings you used?

    I am having this problem.

I shot video using a Canon HV30 set at HDV30p. I cannot figure out any setting in FCP (6.0.6)
that will recognize the camera to import.

When I use iMovie it immediately is ready to download, though it downloads at 720×480…

    ANy help would be great.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks, it works now!! It had been set on DV-OUT. I realized I could not change it back without
first unplugging the HDV/DV-OUT cord. Switched it to HDV-OUT and now L&C grabs it…

    Thx again,

    Rich
