    There are so many possible reasons for the sluggishness. What is it like working on media stored locally?

    One thing that slows the timeline is having the waveform display switched on for audio tracks. This is very dependent on CPU speed.

    A locked bin that is stuck as locked often seems to happen on the Avid systems. Sometimes as a result of an application crashing or not shutting down correctly. The lock is created by a ‘Locking file’ on the Unity server. It can be found by looking at the projects folder, navigate to your specific project and bin. You should see a file with the name of your bin and .lck as the file extention. This lock file can be deleted and it wil then give you control of the bin again without having to create a copy.

    It’s hard to say what’s causing the sluggishness but antivirus software is often to blame.

    For the VTR, the configuration should only require selecting Sony & DSR-45 (or 45P) from the list of DV devices and it will correctly configure the firewire channel to your VTR. If it isn’t talking and you’ve changed the cable, there could be a problem with the firewire port on your MAC. Firewire Port failure used to be quite a common problem on MACs. One option is to try adding a PCI firewire card and see if that brings back communication. Have you tried connecting a camera to the same port? Does it work?

    This looks like interlace problems.

    A couple of questions first:

    1. Are NTSC or PAL?
    2. Are you using a Matrox RTX card?
    3. Did you capture your video in it’s native format and what format was it?
    4. What are your project settings?

    In short you can’t.

    The only way to monitor the correct output as a reference is with an external CRT monitor designed for the purpose and ideally a waveform monitor too. This monitor should also be correctly calibrated.

    The overlay in Premier is being created by your graphics cards, some of which allow you to adjust settings for gamma/contrast/brightness.

    An LCD display is the worst possible way to assess your video. All tv cameras are calibrated to produce an image with the reverse gamma of a standard TV receiver. That is, a normal CRT TV’s brightness and contrast aren’t linear between black and white. This is the nature of the tube itself. The camera is set up to compensate for this by producing an opposite (reverse) gamma to cancel out the effect of the TV tube.

    LCD monitors are linear devices by their very nature as the backlight is permanently at full brightness and the LCD cells are adjusted to block out or pass through this light. The display processor can compensate for this effect and tries to match that of a CRT but they are largely very poor.

    You can calibrate your LCD monitor on the PC using colour matching software and hardware sensors but these are largely designed for print processes rather than TV.

    A correctly setup portable TV is the cheapest option but to do it properly requires a TV monitor designed for the purpose.

    The effect you’re seeing is almost certainly camera related. The jaggies are are result of a small CCD sensor as fitted to most consumer grade cameras. This is far less evident in broadcast cameras that use 3 x 2/3″ CCDs. It is simply a case of needing more pixels to be able to ‘describe’ a diagonal line cleanly.

    There isn’t anything in PPro that would affect audio as you describe. Again this could be down to the camera.

    If you are viewing the image on an LCD monitor rather than CRT you will see line tearing at times due to the low refresh rate of these displays. This is even worse in the UK with 60Hz LCD panels being fed with a 50Hz signal. Again this isn’t Premier causing the problem.

    Do you have a colleague who could lend you a camera to try similar shots with and capture to your computer using this camera rather than your own?

    Are you using a digital or analogue sat uplink?

    Analogue sat links are noisy and digital ones are mostly MPEG2. The limited bandwidth on digital sat links and realtime MPEG2 encoding on the truck will never do your footage justice. You’re also starting with a compressed acquisition format.

    At what point in the chain do you first see the picture degrade?

    If you don’t have the time to sit and wait for clips to render and need multiple video track playback in realtime then you really should go and get a demo. I think you’ll be impressed. You’ll need to justify the cost though!
