We have an Avid Adrenaline 1.6.3 running on a MAC G5. The thing is totally sluggish. We also are using an AVID UNITY. Sometimes when someone opens a bin on another Adrenaline in another room, then closes that bin, it still says they are the owner of the bin. Even if his machine is shut down. I am then forced to make a new bin and work around it. Is there a way to force assign a user to that Bin so I can get it back in my possession?

Also, my AVID won’t lay off to our SONY DSR45 deck. I’ve swapped out the cables, messed with deck configuration and all that. Still, the signal is all shot. Any ideas?

In generall the Avid’s performance is sluggish. When I hit Play, it take about 2 secs to go. The windows open up slowly. When I gang 2 track in the Audio Mix Tool, I can’t quickly shift-select tracks in the timeline. Any Ideas?
    thanks.

First suggestion: upgrade to Adrenaline 2.x. Lots of improvements over 1.x. If you have Assurance, it shouldn’t be too expensive to upgrade.

A locked bin that is stuck as locked often seems to happen on the Avid systems. Sometimes as a result of an application crashing or not shutting down correctly. The lock is created by a ‘Locking file’ on the Unity server. It can be found by looking at the projects folder, navigate to your specific project and bin. You should see a file with the name of your bin and .lck as the file extention. This lock file can be deleted and it wil then give you control of the bin again without having to create a copy.

It’s hard to say what’s causing the sluggishness but antivirus software is often to blame.

For the VTR, the configuration should only require selecting Sony & DSR-45 (or 45P) from the list of DV devices and it will correctly configure the firewire channel to your VTR. If it isn’t talking and you’ve changed the cable, there could be a problem with the firewire port on your MAC. Firewire Port failure used to be quite a common problem on MACs. One option is to try adding a PCI firewire card and see if that brings back communication. Have you tried connecting a camera to the same port? Does it work?
