If you are planning on keeping it and expanding your capabillities with it you should make sure it has PCI-E slots. The dual 2ghz and 2.5 ghz machines only have pci-x and some smaller ones only have pci slots. These are not compatible to the new products on the market. I believe the 2.3 + 2.7 duals and all quad machines have the pci-e slots but you may want to check this for future hardware upgrades.

You don’t buy a new mac tower a week before WWDC and you don’t buy a new camera a week before NAB. Any other time if you have the work lined up and need it now, just buy it. It will always do what it does and will start paying for itself as soon as you get it. Besides, there is nothing else like it. I doubt we will see anything new till NAB and that could only be an anouncement.

Just because you hack an encpypted file doesn’t mean you are breaking laws. I have a sony dvd recorder that I use for transferring clients work on dvd. I can connect it to vhs, dv and today I’m doing a 3/4″. If the client wants, say, 5 copies, I usually would burn the 1st on the sony and the others in toast on the computer. However for some reason the files the sony produces play in my G5 with dvd player but the actual folder appears empty when you open it on the desk top. Mac the Ripper will hack my sony disc and give me the vob files I need to make the copies at 8X on the computer and I can dump the ugly menu.
(FWIW -this sony GX-315 is a piece of junk compared to my old philips 985 rest it’s soul)
I share your distaste for piracy though. I personally own a library of about 400 dvd movies all of which I buy new or used for anywhere from $2.99 – $30.00. I would never waste my time copying these when you can get them so cheap with the coversets, bonus discs and pressed quality made from film. I guess there are always people who do it because they can, but what a waste of time. Sony and the other manufacturers are so fearfull of this activity that the technology is being held back for us, the legitimate users and producers of our own content. We should have had HD-DVD and blueray burners in the computers a year ago. 99% of the cow herd are legitimate users of their own content and we’re being held back because of the piracy occurring outside our industry.

I thought power point wouldn’t handle H.264 files. Don’t you have to go with flip 4 mac = wmv for power point?

Unless you’re getting a really good deal, the dual 2 gig unfortunately has the older PCI-X slots which have been replaced by PCI-E slots on the last 2 generations of macs. The nicest option cards already don’t work with these older machines so the as far as an inverstment for the future I’d go for the newer quads or intels.

Try installing an old browser that doesn’t link to flash player. If you have a pop-up blocker (you will get pop-ups enticing you to install flash) you should eliminate a lot of ads.

Get a sony GV-D300 or 900 (with screen) off ebay. They are small and portable and should be available used for your price range. Sony also has a newer DHR-1000 too. These units have rca audio i/o and composite, s-vhs analog video i/o and digital firewire i/o. (same as dsr-11)

Considering the original HVX-200 published street price and the one B&H used for pre-orders was $10,000.00 for the cam and 2- P2 cards, and most of us considered this reasonable prior to the actual release, I’d be happy if Panny could offer the HVX-200″a” with HDSDI and Genlock AND the OPTION 2 dock and interface for $1500.00 – $2000.00 over current prices. Based on the 3rd party prices and what Canon’s option prices are ($3-$4,000.00 combined) this would be a BARGAN I know but I would certainly be ordering it this way.
