Thanks for the info Glenn. I actually found it very interesting. Makes me worry about what are we going to do when people like the author Charles Poynton retire and are no longer watch dogs.
I went from hi-8 to dv and I practically quit using the s-video i/o’s afterward. I guess I phycologically associate them with analog video and drop outs etc. Had I made the digital transition from beta sp I would likely had a higher regard for s-video. Perhaps after this thread I will get more use from those s-video jacks. Thanks all.

Hopefully whoever sent the photos has bigger files. Usually you’re dealing with 1MB per image (720×480@72dpi). Jpegs compress well for email so they should be able to send at least 10 per email. Often these images are taken from less than ideal quality originals so some color correction and adjustment of the levels will do miracles.

Way to go Ben! I linked to https://www.squared5.com via a post here on the cow. I don’t think it technically is donation ware but I just felt compelled to offer, for something that good. I appreciated the quick in/out to the download too, no long walk down the garden path, no required email address or log in, just a great app that is definately truelly free. There are many simillar contributors of apps and plug ins on the net and right here on the cow and we should all support the ones we use even if it is only $5.00 it will all add up. Often we can purchase one of their for sale items like a book or app. along with their freebies. Who knows, they’ll probably keep doing this if we support them.
I’ve heard about a popular shopping district in the UK where the streets are quaint and narrow and new shoppers actually have to go and peer into windows to see what services or goods the vendors offer in the little shops. There are basiccally NO SIGNS yet everyone does quite well. Contrast that to Hong Kong where your 10′ neon sign can be virtually invisible to a passerby due to the sea of neon flooding the sky. That’s what the squared 5 site reminded me of. YOU are free to evaluate it and decide it’s value whereas “Hong Kong style” a lot of hype and often propaganda are used to even enflate the usefullness and value for the sake of the sale.
Peter, Graeme, Ben (apologies to those not mentioned) and all others who offer free plug-ins, scripts, apps. etc.

Guess you mean Video Display cards, I have the DP 2GHZ with 3 pci-x slots and I’m miff’d because I can’t use the kona-3 Video Capture card with it (it’s pci-e only). I have to use the kona-2 or buy a new computer.

I don’t work have digi-beta but for DVCAM I use a dsr-11 and a dsr-85 (no sdi card). For ingesting into fcp I would opt for the dsr-85 component -AJA IO -fcp. I would think by powering down the AJA IO and ingesting from the dsr-11 via firewire I would get the same component signal from the tape but with unbalanced audio. Because s-video is reduced to chroma and luminance I’ve always stayed away from that option. Since the advent of component betacam we’ve always been able to capture the real world through our lens to seperate ccds keeping the primary colors seperate ultimately till broadcast and these days right to delivery on the viewers component tv. With today’s dsp and equipment like Kim’s A510 these technical attributes do seem to blur ( or should I say meld).

I couldn’t agree more. I was so gratefull the firt time I used it I emailed them $20.00 via paypal with apoligies why I didn’t send more. It’s the honorable thing to do. I always respect the age old custom of tipping and performance bonuses. This day and age many expect and demand them though and others dangle the prospect of them in front of you like carrots. I remember in New Orleans (pre Katrina) the cabbies would lecture you on tipping before they let you in their cabs and never stopped talking about them till you got out. This site however is the age old honor system with no mention of price or how much time it took to develope not even a hint for a tip. In fact, the download link is stretched accross the top of the 1st page, clear and concise! If you do take the time to read the slight blurb there is another direct link at the bottom. This is a first class app and classy folks behind it and I hope we all show them a little class in return.

Yes I agree. Sometimes the s-vhs comming from a digital feed looks realy good but it is still chroma all mixed on 2 wires and luma on the other 2 wires. You lose the rgb component value. DV inspite of the 5:1 compession is still componet over firewire at least.

Digital Juice has a “sports” editor’s tool kit. I don’t know what’s in it but it may be something to check out.

On the contrary Noah, I’ll bet there are some people that ARE GLAD you shot with your DVX-100 and have benifitted from the better quality you were able to provide with it! (ie: you bought it when it was available and had it for those first jobs rather than waiting, sitting on the fence and making do with your old gear.) The DVX100 is an awesome camera. It kinda stole the roost from the PD170 mainly due to the progressive frame rates.
