Pannasonic stated early in the design stages this is not do-able as the cost of the hd tape transport and hd heads is $13,000.00 (I believe that is for the varicam). I’ve compiled your other suggestions along with the others and will make a new post with the results.

The one interviewee stated their longest day was 15 hr. yet the spoof sounds like all shifts are 15/7. I wish my longest day was only 15hrs. I used to think I was self employed but after seeing the new mac pro I realize that I too work for mac, and aja, panasonic, sony,…. Unlike the factory worker, instead of adding a few nickles to my pocket at the end of the day I’m going deeper in dept.
We can point our fingers at Apple but if we look at out hand to see where the other 3 fingers are pointing we can see they point squarely at ourselves, the consummers who are fueling all this industry. It’s not just Apple, if you look at the shoes on your feet they are probablly made in China. One interview I heard (with an actual worker) they worked 10hr./6day shifts. This worker was very happy as it was better than anything she had had up till then. They saved about 1/2 their monthly income which was more than their father earned and supported his familly with annually back in the country living off the land. The chinnese industrial revolution is steamrolling along, about 1000 peasant farmers are recruited a day to work in factories while the back country rice paddies are flooded to make way for the worlds biggest power dams. Wait till these workers are issued credit cards and earn enough cash to get their own place to start collecting stuff. They may find themselves longing for those moments in the sun sifting through the rice paddies for a meager bowl of rice breathing the clean fresh country air and listening to the birds sing. It’s kinda like George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”, same game, just different players.

My g4 DP 450 got so hot it melted the apple logo off the door on the outside. That was some video I was editing… Actually I think I was encoding a dvd. I sprayed compressed air on it (it was the proccessor itself) and then used ice on the outside and then shut down when I got it cooled off. It still made the burnt smell for the next couple of times I powered up but eventually it corrected itself and it has run for a coulpe of years since then (minus the plastic apple logo now missing off the side)

I’m wondering if this deck is even on the apple fcp supported list… There have been a few pieces of equip. from this era that just didn’t work with fcp.

Our current VAC black burst that doesn’t appear to have genlock needs replacing so we are in process of ordering the Horita BSG-50 but for another $130(of course…more expensive) we can get a Horita that produces a genlock signal. “
I’m not sure what the source of your audio drift is but regarding the Horita and genlock it is important to realize a sync generator has a highly accurate clock in it that generates extremly accurate sync signals. If a sync generator has a genlock circuit, it is a bypass function to allow another device in your system to provide sync (this is not a good idea as only the sync gen has the clock but you may want to sync to the other device for some reason). The genlock feature on the sync generator will allow you to do this. For $130.00 I’d think twice about getting that feature unless you have a very large variety of formats and decks around and feel you may use it often, otherwise you can do it yourself by disconnecting house sync and running a cable to the device you wish to sync to.
Genlock equipped devices can utilize a sync signal or any video signal and will copy that signal and use it for timing. No camera, vtp or vtr will create as accurate sync signal as a sync generator.

Sync signals exist in the video not the audio, however FCP locks audio to the video and displays any out of sync timming in the timeline.

sorry, I can’t offer any more advice than Frank but when the files you don’t need import and the one’s you do need don’t, that is Murphy’s Law at play.
Is there any difference between the ones that do import? Are they on different drives? tracks? settings, what? There has to be a reason some do and some don’t.

I don’t have dsp in front of me now (just took my 23″ in for evaluation for it’s 11 dead pixels). The best work flow is create the dvd as sd video and burn a disc, then change the standard from sd to hd in the dsp settings. DSP4 will automatically convert to hd. The disc will only play on the apple dvd player and possibly on some hd-dvd players. You will need to play it off your laptop but that shouldn’t be a problem.

The first G5’s, I think a 1.6 sp and the 1.8’s were pci. The first DP 2 GHZ was pci-x but the second version only had one pci-X and 2 pci’s (go figure) I think it was incentive to buy the 2.3 and the 2.7 machines. The first kona card is pci but then I think it is os9 only (remember that, os9) There must be some pci hd cards around real cheap on ebay.
However given the new g5’s and their great prices you will be throwing money away fixing up your current machine. This is a great time to upgrade BUT after you finish your current project.
Are you using dvdsp 4? As I understand it (pg 22 of the manual) DVDSP4 is supposed to work practically natively with hdv files, just import them in. It only seperates the audio on import. .I would think this would be a faster process.
