Another consideration is the capacity of the system. If you only have 8 lanes available for hard drives and you fill them with 500’s you limit yourself to 4TB. If you fill them with 1000’s you can go to 8TB. It’s kinda like buying ram, if you fill your slots with smaller ones it could come back and bite you further down the road when you have to toss the small ones to make room for the bigger ones.

This makes sense. Why spend $1000.00 on the MXO and $900.00 on the 23″ apple and have a compromise. Scratch both those and get the pro Panasonic LCD monitor LH1700 which a lot of folks are using and have made good reports on it. It is made for video plus it is a waveform/vectorscope too. It was made to do what you want it for – no compromises as with the apple/mxo.

We really need a little more info on your set up. Shanes stock answer should get you set up on your tv though. Once you have a picture on your tv you should set the color and brightness with color bars from the drop down menu on the bottom of the viewer window. Here’s a link.

Hopefully you have a decent tv. Broadcast monitors with smpte or P22 phousphors (more accurate and more stable) and finer resolution (for closer viewing) are meant for this work and some of the newer lcd screens are adaquately accurate. Once you use a proper monitor you will never go back to a tv.

Another nice thing about external raids is you can buy extra caddies (to hold the actual drives) and then hot swap them. When working with P2 you will need lots of drives for storage. I keep drives on hand labled for regular clients and swap them when I do more work for that client. This way, logos, graphics and re-useable media etc are at hand when doing the new project. With today’s big drives this works better and better.

32khz is not recommended unless there is specific equipment your project must be used with. It’s best to convert it to 48khz which is a more common standard. Foe example DVCPRO/DVCPRO50 will not work with 32khz because it uses locked audio.
The pioneer Sony VX1000 was only 32khz and many cams allow 32khz in order to capture 4 channels of sound OR they capture 2 channels of 48khz. FCP automatically converts on the fly but if there is lots of it you should render aludio before getting started.
Some of the HDV cams deviate from the more common 48khz standard as well.

Have you checked your handles, you need to import with long enough handles to accomadate the cross fade duration.

When I bought a used aja io I thought it was fried too. AJA tech support got it up and running like a clock with the proper drivers for my current OS and version of FCP. All over the phone. The aja web site lists the drivers chronologicly so I’d check this out if I were you. The AJA IO rocks and will be faster to set up than anything else.
My hunch is if iyour IO is not scorched or doesn’t smell burnt inside then it is probably a driver issue.
