  • DV shot with 32khz audio???

Posted by David Roth weiss on October 26, 2007 at 7:52 pm

I have traced several issues I was having with client supplied material on DV to his shooting 32khz audio, which came about when he reset the Sony cams to factory defaults. Apparently FCP does a lousy job of converting 32khz to 48khz on the fly and this cause numerous issues including both audio popping and sync issues.

Are there any issue I should know about with capturing at 32khz and editing at 32khz?

    TIA,
    David

32khz is not recommended unless there is specific equipment your project must be used with. It’s best to convert it to 48khz which is a more common standard. Foe example DVCPRO/DVCPRO50 will not work with 32khz because it uses locked audio.

The pioneer Sony VX1000 was only 32khz and many cams allow 32khz in order to capture 4 channels of sound OR they capture 2 channels of 48khz. FCP automatically converts on the fly but if there is lots of it you should render aludio before getting started.

Some of the HDV cams deviate from the more common 48khz standard as well.

    Hi
This has come up here repeatedly, but the whole answer never seems to get collated in one single thread (to my knowledge).
    So what I do:
    1) Edit a duplicate of the Capture Presets settings to 32K audio, but only a 16 bit setting is available.

    2) In Audio/Video Settings-A/V Devices-Playback Output-Audio-Options you can select a Bit Depth of 12 bit (with 4 Channels).

    3) Once the video has been captured use SoundTrack Pro (or another audio application like Peak etc) to change the sample rate of a copy of the clip audio to 48kHz, replacing the new audio into the duplicated video .

    4) Then these audio conformed clips can be used in FCP for a standard 48kHz edit.

I’m not sure if 2) matters for straightforward capture – maybe its only appropriate for 12-bit/4-channel editing and output.
    Cheers

That’s odd. Whenever I recieved DV tapes with 32k audio, I simply captured it using the 48k preset. FCP always seemed to do the upsampling just fine for me. But the last time I had to do this was over a year ago with FCP 5.0.x or maybe 5.1.2.

Frankly Arnie, I never paid any attention and just captured all DV using the Easy Setup and without a care, but it seems something has apparently changed under the hood in FCP 6.

Thanks Paul, I don’t think it matters in this case as its video for web distribution. I changed a copy of the preset to capture 32k audio and now I’m just cutting it as video with 32k audio. It seems to be working just fine.

[David Roth Weiss] “but it seems something has apparently changed under the hood in FCP 6. “

Not really, David. I’ve been shooting/recording with 32K audio from the Canon XL series cameras since FCP v.1x and my work path hasn’t changed much at all. Now I’m using FCP v.6.0.1.

Capturing 32K audio without changing to a custom capture preset setting will invite a multitude of problems, including sync issues, audio pops and glitches. The reason is because FCP thinks it’s capturing 48K audio but it’s not.

Once you’ve captured your lower quality audio, set your audio playback pref to lower quality and just drag it into your 48K track. With the lower quality setting you don’t get the red render bar or the beeping (which you can turn off, BTW). Edit as normal, then when finished reset the audio pref to high quality, render and you’re done. No sync issues, and FCP does a fine job of upscaling the 32K audio to 48.

    Hi David,

what kind of deck do you have? Might be better to capture analogue audio at 48k if you have the option.

    Hey David,

I had one of these tapes just last week, I copied the FW capture preset and changed the audio to 32K, and my FCP sequence as well, and set my DSR 11 to 32k also, worked like a charm.

    Chris,

You finally nailed it for me… I have to set the darned DSR-11 too. Bingo!!! That was the weak link. It belongs to a client and of course the darned remote is missing… But, thanks for that peice of info. I owe ya…

    Hi Don,

I tried to change the audio playback to a lower quality but actually options are not given in changing the audio playback it’s either “default” or “build in output”? Is there another way to do make the change so can edit 32k into 48k?

    Thanks in advance
