  • Am I an idiot? last question regarding new system purchase

Posted by Todd Reid on October 30, 2007 at 7:39 pm

I have a thread from a couple days ago, but I need to make sure I’m not throwing money away.

I’ve got a new quote and I decided to include BOTH the AJA HD AND the Matrox MXO.

    Is this ridiculous?

    My thinking is this…
The matrox was originally thought of to get true HD color out to a cinema display. Reading up on it I see that it will do some outputting too. In addition to the desktop quicktime capture.

I want the AJA HD to hook up some professional audio monitors and to have the ability to grow by business. Currently my clients provide media on P2 cards or harddrives, so I don’t need digitize yet, but I’d like to have that ability, so that I can go after new clients.

I also thought that since the AJAHD is portable, I could edit/digitize on location utilizing my macbook pro (the system I’m currently on).

    Plus it looks really cool.
If the matrox mxo will suffice for now, I’m going to feel like an idiot if I spend $3k on the AJA.

But as I see it, if I want to have the ability to digitize/monitor audio/realtime up/down conversion/portability/see the true (ish) HD color/and have professional equipment to grow my business…..then I need both.

Thank you for your time and attention!

It seems a bit overkill and I have no idea if both sets of drivers can live on the same machine.

What I would do is return the MXO, and get yourself a pro Panasonic LCD monitor (LH1700 or LH2600) and then you will be totally ready to rock. Also, you can take the HDMI out of the ioHD and get the proper HDMI to DVI cable for your Cinema Display. The difference between the MXO and the ioHD is that the MXO will allow a ‘blue only’ mode for calibration. The ioHD does not do that for you. The Panasonic LCD monitor has a blue only mode.

Skip the MXO, its completely unecessary if you buy any Kona I/O device or board.

I concur. If you have the I/O HD, no need for the MXO.

    Shane-

I may have missunderstood you, but when I posted earlier asking if the AJA HD would do true HD color, you mentioned ….

[todd reid] “2-am I correct in thinking that a 23′ cinema display, paired with the AJAHD will deliver true HD color as an output monitor, so that I can be confident in my color correction nad overall look?”

Nope…it won’t. I would be fine as a reference monitor, but not for color correction. There are a few other options that modify the signal and allow you to balance the Apple display and will make it usable for this (as a low end option)…that being the Matrox MXO and the Decklink HD Link…although the HD link needs a capture card with HD SDI to work.

My goal is to have truer color than what I have now. I’m using a Samsung Synmaster 940 LCD in cinema preview mode. Color seems good and no complaints from clients. But I thought I might need to step up my game.

If the AJA HD in conjunction with the AJA HD is “good enough for government work”, which is literally my scenario, then I save $1k.

I’ll go back and read the post carefully and explore the options mentioned…..

    Thanks

[JeremyG] “What I would do is return the MXO, and get yourself a pro Panasonic LCD monitor (LH1700 or LH”

This makes sense. Why spend $1000.00 on the MXO and $900.00 on the 23″ apple and have a compromise. Scratch both those and get the pro Panasonic LCD monitor LH1700 which a lot of folks are using and have made good reports on it. It is made for video plus it is a waveform/vectorscope too. It was made to do what you want it for – no compromises as with the apple/mxo.

All I was saying is that the MXO and ACD would be better than the I/O HD and your Samsung or even the ACD. If you get the I/O HD and the JVC LCD or Panasonic, then that would work too.

    Hi All

First post! I am trying to acheive an effect. Full motion video, color, a portion of the field becomes a b/w photo with a border. Photo remains in background while new photos are placed on top. Can this be done in FCP or should I use motion?

    Thanks in advance.

Hey Jboo624. Welcome to the Cow! You should start a new thread for this as your question has nothing to do with this current thread.

    https://forums.creativecow.net/newpost/8

At the top of your screen you will find something that says “Add a new post” right under the Final Cut Pro heading. Click on that and start a new thread. Your question might get answered with less haste.
